  4. Waste is a priority ! Heading • Why? • Every council • Very public • Legislation and regulation (such as EPA landfill guidelines) • State targets (SASP and State Waste Strategy) • $100M per annum (financial sustainability) = approx 10% of council expenditure • This is a sector with plenty of challenges! The Bigger Picture Heading • Bill Cossey engaged to deliver ‘Future Directions in Waste Management’ to provide advice and recommendations on key issues. • Capacity for Local Government to contribute to SASP and SA Waste Strategy targets via practical approaches and building on current successes • A more coordinated set of arrangements between State an Local Government and greater access to available funds • Greater clarity and consistency for ratepayers on their contribution • due in time for Bi-lateral discussion for next budget Content LGA directions in waste & resource recovery

  9. The Bigger Picture cont’d Heading • Clearly we are faced with challenges and Local Government can’t go it alone. The LGA is forging the necessary partnerships needed to tackle these issues. • aligning the strategic focus of the EPA, Zero Waste SA (ZWSA) and Local Government to achieve outcomes • Consulting with ZWSA to align LG objectives with annual ZWSA business plans • Agreed program of works to free funds from WRF Content LGA directions in waste & resource recovery
