  13. Brazil: Mardis Gras • The carnival is held 4 days before Ash Wednesday and marks the beginning of Lent, A period of fasting. • It probably has its origin in an older pre-christian Roman Festival “Saturnalia”. • It is celebrated by street parties, processions, and dancing the “Samba”

  14. Bunyol (Valencia, Spain) • On the 27th of August at 11am for 2 hours there is “La Tomatina”. • About 1.25,000 Kg of ripe tomatoes are thrown by the people at each other. • The tomatoes must first be squashed to avoid injury.

  16. Sonkajärvi, Finland • Contestants must carry their wife 253.5 m over sand, grass and asphalt. during the annual county fair of the town. Dropping your wife incurs a penalty of 15 seconds. If you manage to be the first to the finish line, you get the prize: the weight of the lady in beer!

  17. Korea Mud Festival • Mud baths are the main highlight of the Poryong Mud Festival. The festival also includes other interesting competitions: mud massages, a mud sculpture, a mud beauty and mud body painting contests.

  18. Munich, Bavaria • The Oktoberfest starting end September lasts 12 days. It is a beer festival. It attracts 6,000,000 visitors to Munich. • The women dress in grindl, and the men in lederhosen.

The Outback Regatta • Alice Springs, in the dry centre of Australia is 1500km from the nearest water. • Now the scene for the yearly Henley-on-Todd Regatta, where "boat races" are held with bottomless boats, held up by the contestants who have to run through the dry riverbed. But if it rains and there is water in the river, the boat race has to be cancelled!

  20. San Fermin, Pamplona • The fiestas of San Fermin are celebrated every year from the 6th to the 14th of July. • At midday every 6 th July, the Fiesta takes off with a bang. A rocket is launched into the sky. • There is the running of the bulls through the streets of the old city to the bull ring.

  21. London, Trooping of the Colour • The Trooping the Colour dates back to the 17th. Century when the Colours of a regiment were used as a rallying point in battle. • In London, the Foot Guards used to do this from 1755 onwards as part of their daily Guard Mounting. In 1805 the parade was for the first time carried out to celebrate the Sovereign's birthday. • It takes place in June each year to celebrate the official Birthday of the Sovereign and is carried out the Household Division with the Queen herself attending and taking the salute.
