  1. Matrix: Taking the Blue Pill; Mastering our Schedule A look into the Master Schedule for 2013-14 School Year

  2. In context… less credits; more rigor • The 2013-14 School brings some very important changes for our district as a whole. • The Requirements for the Class of 2017 is aligned to the A-G Requirements • Three years of Math; Algebra 2 to graduate • 2 Years of Foreign Language to Graduate • Applied Technology & Life Skills • 230 210 credits

  3. In context…the future direction • The district is phasing in the Common Core Standards • By Spring 2015, the district will be moving to the… • Smarter Balanced Exam • California State Test

  4. In context…the Big Change… • The biggest change for the Class of 2017 (current 8th graders) next year is: • No more Ds • Students can no longer earn a D in all A-G Courses • May still earn a D in Physical Education, Health and any non-A-G courses.

  5. In context… additional Changes • The district is re-envisioning the EL program to align with the new Master Plan • ESL 1 & 2 ELD 1 &2 • ESJ 3/4  ELD 3 & 4 seperately • Students get support classes for EL Learners (since we don’t have Applied Technology anymore) • Strategic Literacy • Academic Literacy

  6. In Context: Career Technical Education...the future push • While the district is re-envisioning our core content courses, there is a big push in the district to have the 15 credits of CTE (ROP) courses in the student’s schedule as electives. • Although there is a push, it has not been put down as a requirement… • …yet!

  7. In context: Advanced Placement • There is also an imperative from the Instructional Office to offer Advanced Placement courses as part of schools’ offerings. • At NOW, our initial design was to offer college courses in lieu of Advanced Placement courses. • Because we have been able to offer college courses as part of our Master Schedule, what is our “advanced” offerings to students • Does Advanced Placement meet that need?

  8. In context: SpEds and ELs • We have adhered to the A-G course program for the past couple of years with some waiving out… • NOW, we must adhere to the A-G course program for all students, including… • SPEDs • ELDs • Algebra 2AB & 2 Years Foreign Language will be a requirement for ALL for a high school diploma • …UNTIL…

  9. The Red Pill: Credentialing… • Looking at the credential issues… • Currently, we have 2 auxiliary courses: 1 ESL Support class and 1 APEX after school. • 1 ESL class is taught by a Multiple Subjects credentialed teacher • Math Support courses are being taught by non-Math teachers. • We must submit a Assignment by Committee for teachers teaching outside of their credentials.

  10. Essential Questions What is the 9th grade instructional program like now that “Applied Technology” is no longer a high school requirement? We offer Math Support classes, how do we offer English Support classes? How do we offer it for middle school? How will we offer it in high school? Does “advanced placement” support the mission and vision of our school? What AP courses would be appropriate for our mission/vision & population?
