Drugs

Drugs. Drugs are chemicals of low molecular masses (~100 – 500u). These interact with macromolecular targets and produce a biological response. Next. When the biological response of drugs is therapeutic and useful, the drugs are called medicines.

  1. Drugs

  2. Drugs are chemicals of low molecular masses (~100 – 500u). These interact with macromolecular targets and produce a biological response. Next

  3. When the biological response of drugs is therapeutic and useful, the drugs are called medicines. These are used in diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases. Next

  4. On the basis of pharmacological effect Classification of Drugs On the basis of chemical structure On the basis of drug action On the basis of molecular targets

  5. This type of classification is useful for doctors because it provides them the whole range of drugs available for the treatment of a particular type of problem. ANALGESICS On the Basis of Pharmacological Effects Antiseptics For example, analgesics have pain killing effect, antiseptics kill or arrest the growth of microorganisms.

  6. Drugs usually interact with biomolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids. These are called target molecules or drug targets. On the Basis of Molecular Targets Drugs possessing some common structural features may have the same mechanism of action on targets.

  7. Drugs are also classified on the basis of their chemical structure. Drugs sharing common structural features often have similar pharmacological activity. On the Basis of Chemical Structure Structural features of Sulphonamides For example, sulphonamides have common structural feature.

  8. This classification of a drug is based upon biochemical process. On the Basis of Drug Action For example, all antihistamines inhibit the action of histamine which causes inflammation in the body.
