During the team meeting on October 22, 2008, we reviewed the current status of the PALM-3000 project, which is midway through the preliminary design phase. Although some subsystems have made significant progress, we are currently six months behind schedule due to delays in software and systems engineering. To address budget constraints and maintain our timeline, LGS capabilities have been postponed to FY2011. Key personnel changes include John Cromer's transition off P3K and the addition of Justin Crepp and David Hale to our team. Our critical path includes essential milestones for development and testing scheduled for November 2008 and February 2009.

Management Update A. Bouchez Team Meeting #9 10/22/2008
Where we are • We are midway through the preliminary design phase. • Some subsystems are further advanced • Real-time reconstructor computer. • High-order wavefront sensor. • We’ve fallen 6 months behind our original schedule. • We have commissioned 2 new state-of-the-art instruments on the PALMAO system. • The PALM-3000 design has been refined, and we now have far better estimates of the effort and cost required to completion. • With some reduction in scope, we have the funding and people to deploy PALM-3000 in late summer 2010. 2
What’s new? Scope Changes • To reduce cost and keep to summer 2010 delivery date, we have decided to postpone LGS capabilities to FY2011 at the earliest. • Include LGS components in design, but not implementation. Personnel Changes • John Cromer is moving off of P3K (to MOSFIRE and NIRES). • Justin Crepp started on 1 Oct. • HODM testing, systems engineering, P1640 Cal system interface. • David Hale will be joining Software team on ~1 Dec. • We are recruiting an additional software engineer (0.5 FTE).
FY09 Budget • $125k MRI carry-over from FY08 due to slower than expected progress on software, systems engineering. • While we have identified resources to get us to first light in Aug. 2010, budget is tight. 4
FY09 Schedule Issues Critical Path(s) • Software development • Automations server - AOCP - motor control • High Order Wavefront Processor • High-order deformable mirror procurement and testing • Already delayed by at least 7 months… • Electronics assembly and testing • Especially DM & motor cabling. Strategies • Build up software team. • Monitor progress at Xinetics through meetings and visits. • Be prepared to seek additional electronics technician help as necessary. 5
Milestones • Electronics PDR: 12 November. • Software PDR in mid-January 2009. • Optical Bench PDR: 9 February 2009. … • Pre-ship review: end January 2010. • First commissioning run: August 2010. 7
