  1. Lab 7Lab 8 in 2013 manual Muscle Physiology Gilbert R. Pitts, Ph.D., Joseph R. Schiller, Ph.D., and James F. Thompson, Ph.D.

  2. Lab 7 Activities Biopac Exercise L02-Electromyography (EMG) II: Skeletal Muscle Physiology

  3. Myogram • stimulus: nerve impulse • all or none rule • twitch: a single contraction of all the muscle fibers in a motor unit

  4. Multiple Motor Unit Recruitment

  5. Biopac Exercises • Set Up • Calibration • Data Recording • Data Analysis

  6. L02 - Electromyography (EMG) II Default: Record To Analyze later.

  7. Set Up 1 2

  8. Calibration

  9. Estimate Max Grip Force – note and then hit Redo  48 – round to a number divisible by 4 First record your 100% effort and note the amount in Kg (y axis); then suspend, and redo to collect the appropriate data, shown below.

  10. Multiple Motor Unit Recruitment (MMUR) You want ~2 secs. with a relatively flat plateau. not good so redo good good good 25% 50% 75% 100%

  11. Data Recording for One Arm MMUR Fatigue 45 20 Hit stop at 50% of target minus 2-3 Kg. 25% 50% 75% 100%

  12. Final Data Recording dominant arm non-dominant arm Repeat for your non-dominant arm.

  13. What Do You Want To Do Now? “Record from another subject” until all students’ data is recorded

  14. Data Analysis • Set 4 Data Channel Boxes: CH 41: mean, CH 40: mean, CH 1: value, CH 40: delta T • Use the Zoom and I-Beam tools to collect data and record the data in Tables 1 and 2 on p. 8-9 of your Lab Manual. • Autoscale Waveform to make the data fit the screen. • Autoscale Horizontal will “zoom out” to the entire data screen. • Print the entire Graph: File>Print>Print Graph>Setup> Landscape

  15. Channel Button Settings Set Data Channel Boxes: CH 41: mean, CH 40: mean, CH 1: value, CH 40: delta T, and final SC: none

  16. Data Analysis Screen I-Beam and Zoom tools

  17. Print Options From File Menu Print the entire graph: 2 arms; 4 segments. Check printer properties for color printing.

  18. Lab Report Written Assignment Write you instructor’s name as well as the day and time of your laboratory class on every sheet you turn in. Attach the data plotyou printed out at the end of the Data Analysis.   Mark and label each region on your data plotprintout where each of the data measurements recorded in the Journal log occurred.  The labels to use are: MMUR 1-4 (Multiple Motor Unit Recruitment) and MFat (Muscle Fatigue) for each arm. Answer the 3 final Questions on p 8-9 in your Lab Manual.

  19. End Lab 7 Muscle PhysiologyPresentation
