  1. Moving forward in our writing Time to kick those one paragraph responses into two!

  2. Ok!This is the type of paragraph you are used to (and many of you turned in something like this) • We have written one paragraph with multiple points of proof, although yours would have ICE quotes! Colorado is a beautiful state in many ways. First of all, it has incredible mountains. The white snowcaps cutting through the blue sky is amazing to see. Secondly, it is full of wildlife that is gorgeous to see in the distance. From large animals like elk and moose to the small chipmunks chewing on a leaf, the wildlife add to the landscape. Lastly, the wildflowers in the ditches take a person’s breath away. Seeing the purples, pinks, and yellows all blending together is wonderful. The mountains, wildlife, and plants in Colorado all work together to enhance its beauty.

  3. Our next step = more scuba diving • Now, we will be writing multi-paragraph essays about ONE topic. • For instance, I could still write about how beautiful Colorado is. The difference? • NOT one / two sentences about the mountains. The mountains will get their own paragraph. • NOT one / two sentences about the wildlife. The wildlife will get their own paragraph. • NOT one / two sentences about the wild flowers. The wildflowers will get their own paragraph.

  4. New Vocab word: thesis sentence The most important sentence in a multi-paragraph essay is the THESIS SENTENCE The thesis sentence states what the whole essay will be about. You will still use TOPIC SENTENCES to begin each paragraph.

  5. THIS IS A ONE-TRIMESTER GIFT THESIS SENTENCESgenerally appear in a whole separate paragraph called the introductory paragraph. FOR THIS TRIMESTER ONLY, our thesis sentences will stand alone. (We will learn the rest of the intro during 3rd trimester).

  6. What does this LOOK like on your page? Thesis statement Body Paragraph #1 Body Paragraph #2 Concluding statement

  7. What does this look like? Thesis sentence: Colorado is beautiful because of the mountains, wildlife, and plants. Topic Sentence#1: Colorado is a gorgeous place because of the incredible mountains. (I then write 5-6 sentences explaining how the mountains are so pretty). Topic Sentence #2: Another reason Colorado is so beautiful is that is has amazing wildlife. (I then write 5 -6 sentences about the wildlife.) Topic Sentence #3: The third reason that Colorado is pretty is that its plants. (I then write 5 – 6 sentences about the gorgeous wildflowers). Concluding sentence: The beauty of Colorado is due to its mountains, wildlife, and plants.

  8. So…what will you be writing about? We are going to “knock out” a couple of skills with this next assignment. This FORMAT is exactly what the format will look like for your 7th grade benchmark test that you are writing next week. Remember: Your name is attached to this test, so you want to do your best work; BUT, it does not get factored into your grade. However, the symbolism work that you are writing about WILL be good practice for your end of tri test, as well as the work we are doing with The Giver.

  9. Going back to our HOTS with symbolism You are going to see TWO objects today. Your job is to be able to EXPLAIN how/what these two objects symbolize in The Giver. Keep in mind, you cannot tell me that they represent something and consider that HOTS. If we were talking about Rikki-tikki-tavi, you would not use a snake to tell me that symbolizes the protagonist. However, you might tell me that the images of the scales of justice represent the struggle for power between Rikki and the snakes. You are going to see two different objects. First, you are simply going to brainstorm everything you can think of that the object MIGHT symbolize. Please do NOT worry about the essay until after we have done this.

  10. Brainstorm Time You may organize your ideas in any app that you would like. Take a moment to set up your app for the two objects. Object #1: The Apple (hint: do NOT tell me it represents when Jonas sees it in the air, but rather what qualities does an apple have?) Object #2: Band-Aids

  11. Your prompt Thesis statement: Write an appropriate statement that addressed this prompt: What two symbols can represent multiple ideas in The Giver? Concluding Statement: Finally, you will end the essay with a brief re-statement of the thesis statement. Now, write the topic sentence for your first body paragraph. Next, write the concluding sentence of your first body paragraph. Repeat this step for your second body paragraph.
