Gary MKIII Results

The Gary MKIII mission aimed to collect and transmit temperature, pressure, and altitude data while capturing images at 80,000 feet. The system successfully transmitted data to the ground station but lost reception shortly after launch. Issues with the SD card prevented data retrieval, leaving uncertainty about whether images were captured. Key lessons from the mission included the need for a better wire harness system for easier management, a voltage monitoring system to prevent battery drainage, and performing a complete system run from launch until battery depletion.

  2. Mission • Collect and transmit temperature, pressure, and altitude data, as well as take a picture at 80,000 feet. • Use temperature data to activate and turn off heaters, ensuring the interior of the box is kept above 10 degrees Celsius. • Use pressure data to estimate altitude using function stored in computer, and activate camera at desired altitude. • Use the power distribution board in conjunction with the computer to activate and turn off components. • Transmit data to ground with radio, as well as store it on onboard SD Card.

  3. Results • Successfully transmitted data back to ground station, but lost reception shortly after launch • Unable to retrieve data stored due to some SD card issues. • Uncertain if camera took picture until able to retrieve data from the SD card.

  4. What We Learned • Should have used a wire harnessing system to make wire management easier and neater • An voltage monitoring system should be used on the EVK to shut down before batteries were drained • A full system run should have been done from mission start until the batteries were drained
