MEBs Mission X • The MEB is a mission tailored force that conducts support area, maneuver support, consequence management, and stability operations in order to assure the mobility, protection, and freedom of action of the supported Division or Corps. • Doctrine change created the requirement for mission command for the Area of Operation (AO) which was formerly “the Division Rear”. Current doctrine and future concepts assigns this AO to a MEB as an economy of force Mission Command which frees up BCTs to support the Division Commander in their traditional roles. • There are 21 MEBs in the force today: 2 AC, 16 NG and 3 USAR. • MEBs are normally assigned to, attached, or placed under the operational control (OPCON) of a division. However, they may be attached to or placed OPCON to a corps or theater army to serve in the theater army area of operations or joint security area.

  3. Past, Current and Future Ops • Past: Seven MEBs have completed successful deployments in support of OEF, KFOR and CBRNE Consequence Management Response Force (CCMRF) to date. • Current: Four MEBs are currently supporting OEF, OND, KFOR and Defense CBRNE Response Force (DCRF). • Future: Five MEBs are alerted to back-fill the current deployed MEBs.

  5. X X SUST Doctrine Evolution: Migration of “Rear Area” Doctrine change created the requirement for mission command for an Area of Operation (AO) which was “the Division Rear”. MEB: Typical Organization • The MEB provides Mission Command for up to two Engineer Battalions, two Military Police Battalions, one Chemical Battalion, a Tactical Combat Force (TCF) and other assigned units/detachments. • The MEB should not exceed Mission Command of seven battalions for an extended period. • If 3 or more functional Battalions are required for an extended period a Functional Brigade(s) may be necessary for Mission Command of the functional Battalion .

OEF: Support Area Operations 1st, 196th and 26th MEB ISO OEF • Missions: • 1st MEB conducted Support Area , Maneuver Support and Stability operations to enable the Afghan Government to establish civil security, civil control and restore essential civil services. (08-09) • 196th MEB conducted Support Area , Maneuver Support and Stability operations to enable the Afghan Government to establish civil security, civil control and restore essential civil services. (10-11) • 26th MEB “Yankee Brigade” conducts Support Area , Maneuver Support and Stability operations. Provide Mission Command and Protection for U.S. and coalition forces operating in the capital region. (11-12). “TF Warrior” AOR Afghanistan

  16. OND: Support Area Operations Task Force LEGION (149th MEB) Mission: Provides mission command and protection/security. Conduct support area operations for the Victory Base Complex and other key US FOBs throughout the country. Additionally, conducts Security Force Operations throughout United States Forces-Iraq (USF-I) Area of Responsibility (AOR). Operation New Dawn (Iraq) Support Area of Operations Victory Base Complex

KFOR: Stability Operations 110th, 141st, 92nd and 111th MEB ISO KFOR Mission: Multi-national Battle Group East will ensure Safe and Secure Environment and Freedom of Movement IAW UNSCR 1244 and the Military Technical Agreement.
