  1. Understanding Theology in the Israel/Palestine Debate An Introduction Rob Dalrymple PhD

  2. In 1948 the nation of Israel was born • In 1967 Israel gained control of more land including east Jerusalem • Since 1967 Israel has held a military occupation of the West bank and the Gaza strip

  3. How should the Church respond? • We are Pro-Israel, Pro-Palestine, Pro-America, Pro-Peace • We are especially Pro-God’s people (Matt 25:31-46)

  4. Theological: what does the Bible say about the people of God and the land? • Justice: what are the injustices that are occurring in the name of religion? • Political: what is the relationship between the Church and the state? • Missional: what is the call for the people of God and how does this affect our witness?

  5. Presuppositions 1. Church is called to care for the people of God (Matt 25:31-46; John 13:35) 2. God loves Justice (Ps 37:28)

  6. Psalm 111:7 The works of His hands are truth and justice • Prov 31:8-9 Open your mouth for the dumb, For the rights of all the unfortunate. Open your mouth, judge righteously, And defend the rights of the afflicted and needy • Eccl 4:1 Then I looked again at all the acts of oppression which were being done under the sun. And behold I saw the tears of the oppressed and that they had no one to comfort them; and on the side of their oppressors was power, but they had no one to comfort them.

  7. Several presuppositions 1. Church is called to care for the people of God (Matt 25:31-46; John 13:35) 2. God loves Justice (Ps 37:28) 3. The people of God transcend national boundaries

  8. Martin Luther King Jr: “The church must be reminded that it is not the master or the servant of the state, but rather the CONSCIENCE of the state. It must be the GUIDE and the CRITIC of the state, and never its TOOL. If the church does not recapture its prophetic zeal, it will become an irrelevant social club without moral or spiritual authority.”

  9. What are our goals? • A biblical understanding of what God says about the land and the people • Be advocates for truth, justice, and peace

  10. Exod 2:23-25 “Now it came about in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died. And the sons of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry for help because of their bondage rose up to God. So God heard their groaning; and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God saw the sons of Israel, and God took notice of them.”
