Overview: How the Career Management Seminar Supports the Overall Career Process • Provides a dedicated time to focus on career • Provides a forum for the Office of Career Services to engage students early on and deliver content to assist in jump starting the career management process • Provides a comprehensive toolkit to equip students for success in the internship and job search process • Is the first in what we envision as a series of professional development seminars or workshops that build upon one another in providing relevant and real-time career management techniques • Is a platform for us to obtain your feedback and input regarding additional programming we should offer in the future

Overview: What Should Your Objectives Be for the Career Management Seminar? • Create and develop your personal career search strategy. • Write effective career search documents, including a resume, cover letters, and thank you notes that market your value proposition and present you competitively to potential employers. • Utilize career resources available through the OCS and other sources to research companies, industries, and opportunities and to identify networking contacts. • Successfully identify and engage with employers, alumni, professional organizations, peers and personal contacts for the purpose of networking to further your career search.

Overview: What Should Your Objectives Be for the Career Management Seminar? • Exhibit appropriate professional and ethical behavior in interactions with potential employers and other important stakeholders including Smith School faculty, staff and peers throughout the career search process and after accepting an offer. • Prepare and practice for the most common MBA interview questions and methods. • Through active engagement in your own career development and career search process, develop the skills needed to create a personal brand to better position you to secure full-time employment or an internship. • Prepare for effectively negotiating employment offers.

Career Development Timeline • Timeline provides a guide for when to undertake career development activities • Timeline is fluid and will vary slightly by individual situation • Career development is an iterative process • Major phases of career development during first year of business school include: • Preparing for career search • Creating a career plan • Exploring and refining targets • Actively pursuing target opportunities • Finalize internship and maintain professional network

July August • Complete career assessments including CareerLeader, DISC and Social Skills Inventory. • Draft resume according to Smith guidelines and submit to career advisor for review. • Begin researching target industries, companies and functions. • Attend career development portion of orientation. • Create HireSmith profile and upload OCS-approved resume. • Check schedule for corporate presentations and on-campus recruiting (begins 8/25). • Attend the seven-week Career Management Seminar which begins on (8/30). • Schedule initial advising/ mock interview with advisor (8/30). • Attend MBA Career Conference Workshop (8/31)

Begin attending company information sessions. • Prepare for/attend MBA Career Quest career fair 10/8. • Determine extra-curricular activities to enhance career development. • Begin conducting informational interviews. • Attend OCS industry panels and networking events. • Begin monitoring internship postings in HireSmith. • Refine list of top companies. • Use SmithConnector to identify alumni contacts in target companies. • Begin actively targeting contacts and employment opportunities in your target companies. • Continue monitoring and applying to internship postings in HireSmith and through other sources. • Use online tools to continue researching and refining employment targets. • Develop elevator pitch and accomplishment stories. • Review corporate leadership programs and deadlines and determine if you will apply. • Review upcoming MBA Career Conferences and determine if you will attend.

November December • Assess network of contacts and work to expand network within target companies. • Research job openings via HireSmith, company web sites, and online job posting sites on a weekly basis. Intensify internship applications. • Send thank you notes for all informational and formal interviews and networking conversations on an ongoing basis. • Refine your resume to incorporate new/ongoing professional development experiences. • Refine your elevator pitch to include newest learnings and refined focus. • Contact potential employers to express interest in anticipated openings and schedule interviews or informational interviews for over winter break.

  16. January (Winter Break) April/May February/March • Continue internship strategies from fall semester and catch up in areas you may have fallen behind in during the semester. • Schedule/conduct interviews • Further identify internship opportunities, find networking contacts and send out resumes. • Review schedule for winter on-campus recruiting which beings on 1/24. • Conduct last push to secure and finalize internship offer if you do not have it finalized already. • Submit internship reporting form to OCS. • Send an update to your network to notify people of your summer plans and thank them for their help along the way. • Make the most of the on-campus recruiting season that kicks off in late January. • Reach back out to networking or interview contacts you worked with in the Fall to update on your internship search and generate new leads. • Continue to monitor postings in HireSmith and other sources on a regular basis. • Intensify internship applications.

Smith Gold Standard • Getting on the same page: A student-lead initiative designed to provide clarity on what OCS recommends regarding what you need to achieve • Designed to provide guidelines around where you should aspire to be in the career development process. • Provides a checklist for you to track your progress, identify your strengths and focus your efforts on areas that require further refinement. • Provides clear and objective expectations regarding what it takes for the career advising and employer development team to go beyond the call of duty and personally refer you to an employer. • Facilitates continual evaluation throughout the career advising process.

Smith Gold Standard • Written communication skills • Uses OCS approved industry/job specific resume • Writes professional cover letters that follow the guidelines provided by the OCS • Drafts appropriate networking outreach that follow structure of key elements outlined in the guidelines • Writes timely and professional thank you notes for all informational interviews, networking conversations and job interviews • Oral communication skills • Demonstrates effective interview skills and is approved by OCS in a mock interview • Delivers clear, concise and compelling elevator speech • Professional Appearance and Demeanor • Exhibits appropriate business formal and business casual attire • Exhibits appropriate manners when dealing with potential employers

Smith Gold Standard • Self Guided Career Development • Understands career path in the chosen field • Conducts extensive industry/company research followed by focused job search • Demonstrates an understanding of the value of networking and how to conduct it • Demonstrates an understanding of the job description and can create a cover letter that addresses how KSAOs (knowledge, skills, abilities, other) apply to that specific job • 100% attendance for the Career Management Seminar (for incoming MBAs) • Interview Skills and Preparation • Able to discuss the latest industry/company news • Able to discuss company strategy and latest performance • Able to compare company performance to that of the industry • Demonstrates mastery of behavioral interviewing skills • Demonstrates mastery of case interviewing skills • Career Management Seminar (Incoming MBA Candidates) • 100% attendance for career management seminar sessions • Active participation during career management seminar sessions • Completion of homework/deliverables for career management seminar sessions

Ethics • There is an expectation of professional, honest, ethical interactions with all staff, faculty, fellow peers and employers • General respect and courtesy are the standard • Read the Smith School Code of Ethics to ensure that you understand the policies, know what is expected of you, and avoid sticky situations • Two very important responsibilities: • Timely reporting of internship and full time job offers and acceptances • No reneging on internship and full time job offers

  22. Best Practices for Leveraging OCS in Career Development

Career Advising Basics • Make your time with your career advisor count: • Set an agenda for what you want to cover during each advising session • Send your resume, job description and/or cover letter to your advisor ahead of time (48 hours preferred) • Prepare for mock behavioral interviews by leveraging the Informational Interviewing and Behavioral Interviewing guides. • Respect your advisor’s time • Don’t be a “no-show” for an advising appointment. Your advisor is not likely to honor another appointment during that same week • Don’t arrive at your advising appointment unprepared or having not completed the “homework” from a previous appointment • Don’t schedule back to back appointments on the same day. Give yourself time to incorporate feedback and practice prior to scheduling another appointment • Don’t schedule multiple appointments in one week across multiple advisors • Take advantage of OCS career programming

Career Advising Availability • The advising team balances career advising and employer development across the 1st year and 2nd year full time MBA program, part time MBA program, Executive MBA program, and MS Finance and Accounting programs • During the fall, we recommend that you schedule a maximum of one career advising appointment per month • During the winter and spring, we recommend that you schedule appointments as needed

The Balancing Act • Recognize that you will need to manage academics, extracurricular activities and career development in a parallel fashion • Recognize that there will be competing priorities • You will need to figure out what is mission critical and how to identify and address low hanging fruit • There is time to do it all and be successful if you: • Recognize when good enough is good enough and when you have reached the point of diminishing returns • Participate in career-related events and development activities outside the classroom • Get an early start • Continuously and systematically network • Recognize that internship searching is a process – Leverage resources available through OCS

Words of Wisdom from Smith School Alumni • “I would recommend to incoming first years to meet with their career services advisor and create a six- month and 12-month plan within the first month of school. Summer will be upon them (and internships will be filled) faster than they realize. Know yourself and if you can operate on your own or need a more structured program.” • “I think it is important to get momentum on the job search early so that you don't have to start from zero your second year.” • “Do not wait until you have an interview, to start practicing interviews.  Employers once they are interested often move quickly and you need to be ready to interview at a drop of a hat.  It also gives you time to reflect and clarify your thinking.”
