A few years ago I was chided by an argumentative fellow that I was violating 1 Peter 3:15 by not responding to his blustering. • 2. 1 Peter 3:15 clearly tells us: • “and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you” • 3. Does this verse literally teach us that we must answer every person who questions us? Was I wrong for Not Answering?

  8. 1 Peter 3:14-17 14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. "And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled." 15But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 16 having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. 17 For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.

  16. 1 Peter 3:15 - “…to everyone who asks you…” • Ask - aiteo aitew154 • TRENCH- Two words are translated “to ask”; aiteo & erotao. • Aiteo is the more submissive and suppliant term, It is consistently used to refer to an inferior’s seeking something from a superior. • In classical Greek, erotao never means “to ask” but only “to interrogate” or “to inquire”. The word implies an equality between the one who asks and the one who is asked.

For example: • Men asking of God - Mt 7:7 • Child asking a Parent - Mt 7:9,10 • Subject asking a king - Acts 12:20 • People from Pilate - Luke 23:23 • Beggar from Passer - Acts 3:2 • Synonyms - Beg, Call Crave, Desire, Require • *“Erotao” - suggests the petitioner is on a footing of equality

Some questioners do not deserve answers because of either the foolishness of the question or the motivation!

McGarvey - The Christian must … be discriminatingly judicious. He must know dogs and swine when he sees them, and must not treat them as priests and kings, the fit objects for the bestowal of holy food and goodly ornaments • c. Some are not interested in what we have to say…even when they ask! Again, these are not deserving an answer.

Some folks are going to ask questions just to instigate a foolish argument…they deserve NO ANSWER!

No guilt foravoiding this sinful conflict
