    3. Kuraray CSR Culture Kurarays corporate culture is imbued with the idea of social responsibility, which motivates us to "contribute to the world and individual well-being through actions that others are unable to produce", as a good corporate citizen. Kuraray is proud to have a corporate culture in which each and every employee stays keenly aware of his or her responsibilities to society as a good citizen and takes action backed by a strong sense of ethics

    4. Approach to the Environment Basic Policy The basic guidelines for environmental conservation require that we fulfill our responsibility to future generations through sustainable corporate activities that are in harmony with the global environment and the local community. In order to achieve these basic guidelines, we will undertake the following activities. (1) We will assign the highest priority to the environment and safety in the course of our corporate operations. (2)We will work to improve the global environment and ensure its sustainability. (3) We will develop technologies and products that contribute to the goal of improving the global environment. Principles of Conduct (1) Continual reduction of designated chemical substance emissions into the environment (2) Contribution to the prevention of global warming (3) Promotion of conservation, reuse and recycling of resources (4) Development and supply of technologies for improving the environment and products with low environmental impact (5) Utilization of environmentally friendly products (6) Public disclosure of environmental information and dialog with the community (7) Raising the levels of environmental consciousness and environmental management (8) Cooperation with stakeholders

    5. Targets and Actual Results

    6. Approach to Safety The spirit of the slogan from the 2006 Special Safety Activities, Safety is the Cornerstone of Everything We Do, is alive and well. Every year, Kuraray sets a basic policy which is implemented in occupational safety and disaster prevention activities. Basic Policy on Ensuring Safety (Fiscal 2010) (1) Ensuring Safety First, Production Second (2) The most important thing in implementing Safety First is to make sure you CHECK (3) Ensuring that all employees have a strong will for achievement of zero accidents and disasters

    7. Targets and Actual Results

    8. Responsible Care Kuraray participates in the initiative of Responsible Care. This is the chemical industry's global voluntary initiative under which companies, through their national associations, work together to continuously improve their health, safety and environmental performance, and communicate with stakeholders about their products and processes in the manufacture and supply of safe and affordable goods that bring real benefits to society

    9. Kuraray Green Operation Kuraray is a very ECO conscious company and as an outgrowth of its global commitment to GREEN practices, has equipped many of its facilities with energy saving features

    10. KAI Green Applications and Products Chemical and Resins Plastic Fuel Tank (PFT) Light weighted in order to save fuel; Environment friendly lower carbon footprint vs. steel Biofuel compatible Other benefits such as space optimization, safety, corrosion resistance, etc. Agricultural Fumigant Barrier Film (TIF totally impermeable film) EVAL barrier TIF film provides orders of magnitude higher barrier to methyl bromide and other fumigant gases than current barrier film structures (VIF virtually impermeable film) The fumigant gases are used as herbicides/pesticides which can be hazardous to humans and harmful to the atmosphere and environment The significantly higher barrier of EVAL TIF films allows farmer to cut the fumigant gas dose by 50% or more, due to the low permeability

    11. KAI Green Applications and Products Chemical and Resins (cont.) Barrier Building & Construction Films EVAL barrier films serve as an excellent and reliable barrier against radon gas (radioactive carcinogen), forming a tight barrier between the ground and the foundation of a building EVAL barrier films can also be used as a methane and VOC barrier for brown field development and recovery Barrier Geomembrane EVAL barrier landfill membrane provides barrier and chemical resistance to prevent BTEX (benzene, tolulene, ethylbenze and xylene) and VOCs from reaching ground water in the area surrounding a landfill

    12. KAI Green Applications and Products Chemical and Resins (cont.) EVAL for solar cells (green energy) EVAL provides a crack resistant barrier to prevent Argon gas permeation through a bladder, that is crucial to the operation of the solar cell serves as a secondary gas barrier to Argon (or other gas) Development of packaging structures, combining EVAL with bio-based polymers such as Polylactic Acid (PLA) EVAL/PLA barrier structures could be a better alternative to commercial metallized PLA barrier structures for applications like snack bags (Frito Lay Sun Chips) EVAL /PLA structures could provide a more sustainable platforms to PO-based barrier structures

    13. KAI Green Applications and Products Chemical and Resins (cont.) HYBRAR PVC (halogenated material) replacement No harmful plasticizers like DEHP in PVC Can be recycled More environmentally friendly through total lifecycle Kurarity (LA-Polymer) development for applications with PLA and other bio-based plastics Compatibility with PLA offers product design flexibility with renewable bio-based plastics Septon Oil Spill Clean-up Inherent oil absorbing capabilities for both shoreline and offshore oil clean-up

    14. KAI Green Applications and Products Chemical and Resins (cont.) PVA gel for wastewater treatment - composed primarily of polyvinyl alcohol PVA gel has a porous, reticulate structure that can trap and carry microorganisms PVA gel is used as an alternative to the activated sludge method in the treatment of wastewater Applications - municipal wastewater treatment, household wastewater treatment, industrial wastewater treatment KURARAY COAL - activated carbon made from coconut shells, coal, and special synthetic resins Used for the treatment of drinking and waste water, adsorption and elimination of gases and chemicals, and recently to make electrodes carbon for the electric double layer capacitors used as auxiliary power sources in hybrid cars and fuel cell cars.

    15. KAI Green Applications and Products Fibers and Textiles KURARAY COAL - activated carbon made from coconut shells, coal, and special synthetic resins As an activated carbon fiber, is used in combination with non-woven fabrics to make functional products such as filters and molded products TIRRENINA Tirrenina is the line of non-solvent microfiber that looks and feels more like natural leather Reduces or eliminates the usage of: Water (-70%) Organic Solvent (-99%) CO2 (-35% kg/kg)

    16. KAI Green Applications and Products High Performance Materials Industrial filter membranes polysulfone-based membranes capable of filtering microparticles 0.003 - 3 microns in size from liquids. They have a broad spectrum of applications in water purification, wastewater treatment, the production of ultrapure water, and other areas. municipal water purification and wastewater treatment industrial water purification and wastewater treatment ultra-pure water production

Kuraray Sustainable Activities & Research Photovoltaics (PV) PVB (Polyvinyl butyral) as encapsulant for solar cells Encapsulants provide protection for solar cells Organic PV Lower cost than traditional rigid solar panels Roll to roll production Installation Portable Acrylic Lens for Concentrated PV Allows higher conversion efficiency

    18. Kuraray Sustainable Activities & Research H2 Fuel Cells Cleaner energy production compared to petro-based sources (i.e oil & coal) Electrolyte membrane materials for fuel cells Sulfonated Pentablock Copolymers for fuel cell membranes LED/OLED Lighting Higher efficiency compared to incandescent & fluorescent lights PMMA Light Guide & Diffuser using Kurarays Fine Pattern Technology More efficient transmission of light

    19. Kuraray Sustainable Activities MICROFADE New Ballast Water Management System Ballast Water and Related Problems Ballast water, consisting of sea water that is drawn into a specialized tank in order to maintain balance on cargo ships, is often taken from a port in one country and discharged at a port in another. As a result, the disruption of local ecological systems after the introduction of foreign plant and animal species contained within ballast water has become an international problem. In response to this problem, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted what is officially referred to as the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments in February 2004. This agreement is scheduled to make mandatory the installation of ballast water treatment equipment aboard ships in near future.

    20. Kuraray Sustainable Activities MICROFADE (cont.) Key Features: Organisms are sufficiently removed during the front-end process through high-precision filtration that employs special filters. This makes it possible to substantially reduce the amount of active substances (chemical substances) used during the post process. Energy-saving operation is achieved due to Kuraray's special filters with low-pressure requirements, which enable the MICROFADE system to use existing power generators and ballast pumps. Compact design of the system's primary components (filtration unit and chemical infusion unit) allows for conserving space. Requiring neither precise temperature control nor a large-sized tank, the system also enables reduction in power consumption and conservation of space. These savings are due to the utilization of solid chemical agents that can be stored at room temperature.
