  2. Overview King Hammurabi was the king of Babylonia. As his city grew, he knew he needed to control it somehow. Cue: The Code of Hammurabi. The Code has 282 laws in it, most including death as a penalty. Here are some of the laws.

  3. Law #4 If he satisfy the elders to impose a fine of grain or money, he shall receive the fine the action produces.

  4. Law #18 If the slave will not give the name of his master, the finder shall bring him to the palace, a further investigation will follow,and the slave shall be returned to his master.

  5. Law #22 If any one is committing a robbery and is caught, he shall be put to death.

  6. Law #56 If any one open his ditches to water his crop, but is careless, and the water flood the field of his neighbor, then he shall pay his neighbor in corn for his loss.

  7. Law #148 If a man take a wife, and she be seized by disease, if he then desire to take a second wife he shall not put away his wife, who has been attacked by disease,but he shall keep her in the house which he has built and support her so long as she lives.

  8. Conclusion As you can tell, these laws were an early attempt at government. They made sense many years ago, but now some sound absurd. Using Hammurabi's Code as a blueprint, many generations made or revised laws to fit their society. Some of our laws today might even be based on the early decrees.
