Colleges and Universities Lead the Way… • Colleges and Universities actively engaged in Green, Sustainability initiatives are catalysts for change and provide models for society to follow. • Actively teaching others to learn and apply simply green concepts will positively impact communities providing the engine that drives constructive cultural changes to improve the Earth’s Health.

Drexel’s Position on Sustainability:Think Before You Think Green! • Begin with a "Stop, Start, Continue” approach to plan changes • Know your limitations, do what you can do now and do what others are doing based on real results and data. • Develop a long range plan and incorporate changes in projects when it makes sense and funding incentives are available.

Drexel University’s Sustainability Commitment Statement Drexel University is committed to protecting the needs of future generations, promoting excellence in environmental stewardship and sustainability, and encouraging individual members of the University community to develop approaches to their work and lifestyles that improve the Earth’s health. Advancing Sustainability requires education, research, planning, action, accountability, and leadership. Therefore, Drexel University’s policies, practices, and curricula whenever possible will reflect approaches that encourage reductions in life cycle costs, safeguard or restore functioning natural systems, and enhance human well being.

Goals for Drexel Green Efficiency: Develop and implement strategies that support university priorities related to using water, energy, and transportation more efficiently.Recycling: Develop and implement strategies that support university priorities related to recycling paper, cans, bottles, plastic, glass, cardboard, cartridges, and other materials. Reduction: Develop and implement strategies that support university priorities related to reducing energy consumption, pollution, waste, and carbon footprints.Re-Use : Develop and implement strategies that support university priorities related the re-use of bags, mugs, and other products that can be donated or re-purposed and to promote purchasing recycled Education : Provide/share information and mechanisms for teaching others through class curriculum, programs, events and information sharing vehicles to help individuals adopt and apply green concepts.

REDUCTION • Energy   • Pollution  • Waste Drexel’s new Integrated Science Building will include a the 140,000-square-foot, multi-story living Bio Wall operating in conjunction with the building’s mechanical system using the natural respiratory properties of plants to cool the indoor air in summer, and function like a humidifier in the winter.

In 2011 Drexel will be 100% Wind Powered • According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s greenhouse gas equivalencies calculator, the environmental benefits are: • Equivalent to the carbon sequestered by 12,904 acres of trees • Equivalent to Removing 11,571 passenger vehicles from the road, according to the Environmental Protection Agency’s greenhouse gas equivalencies calculator.

Reduce Pollution • In 2011 over 60,518 metric tons of CO2 will be avoided annually through purchase of Wind Generated Electricity • Over 1,802,087 pounds of CO2 avoided annually through reductions in electric consumption utilizing building automation systems and upgrading building equipment •  Greenhouse Gas Inventory • 5-Story Bio Filter Wall • Green Roofs • Solar Trash Compactors and Recycling Units

Drexel’s My Green Cube is Tied to an Environmental Responsibility Pledge • Pledge based on concepts and tasks on the cube • Pledge emphasizes individual responsibility improving the environment • Pledge focuses on making environmentally responsible choices everyday to improve Earth’s health • Pledge triggers eligibility for access to grants or gift cards

My Green Cube Grows Participation with Event Programming • Each side of the cube provides a theme for organizing events and activities . • Activities focused on environmental awareness, sustainability, and education are planned around college sporting events, school events, community festivals, or state fairs using one day or five day formats

My Green Cube Starts Early with its K – 12 Program • Lessons on each of the five tenets with a wealth of information and activities geared toward helping students understand the real-world implications and importance of being a sustainable citizen of the planet were developed. • Lesson plans, pledge forms and event planning materials were already used by elementary and middle school students.

  39. Education drives change… • Drexel’s My Green Cube was recognized by Penn Future for engaging individuals to make environmentally responsible choices everyday as well as learning about and changing what kind of energy they use and how they use it.
