In this lesson plan by Mr. Houghteling from December 14, 2012, students dive into enriching activities aimed at enhancing their ACT English skills. With only seven shopping days left until winter break, there's a charged atmosphere of excitement and urgency. The agenda includes reflecting on recent test results, step-by-step guidance on tackling ACT passages, and strategies for timed readings. Students will focus on argument identification and main ideas, learn to compute their reading rate, and improve their critical reading skills while engaging in collaborative annotation exercises.

AP Language and Composition December 14, 2012 Mr. Houghteling “It’s a Frenetic Friday, and because it’s Friday, you know what that means…”
“It’s great to be alive!” …with only seven more shopping days before winter break to get your favorite teacher a lovely fruit basket!
AGENDA • JFK Take home test—Results. • Step-by-Step ACT English Passage • Timed Reading • Argument and Main Idea • Underlined portion • Underlined with answer choices
ACT English – Step by Step • Read the entire passage at a brisk but comfortable reading speed. • When you are down, write down the number that appears on the screen. THIS IS IMPORTANT!
Compute your reading rate. • Take the number of words read = 305 • Then, divide 305 by how many minutes you read (did you write down your number?) Example = 305 1.75 = @174 words per minute.
Argument / Main Idea / Tone • Re-read the passage, one paragraph at a time ONLY. • Answer the questions (per paragraph) on the appropriate lines.
Reading Underlined portion • Turn the sheet over. DO NOT, for any reason, TURN THE SHEET BACK TO THE FRONT SIDE. • Annotate any underlined portion that you think looks wrong, weird, or out-of-place.
ACT English— “A Reflection on Bubbles” • Re-read the text quickly. • Answer questions 31-45, directly on the handout. • Look for and cross out the letters of incorrect answers first. • On the left side of the questions, WRITE the letter of the correct response. • Do this for every question.
