What’s the big deal with Iowa and New Hampshire? • New Hampshire is the first primary, Iowa has the first caucus. • Its real importance comes from the massive media coverage it receives • It is testing grounds for who will be the front-runner. • As lower-population states without a major metropolitan area, IA and NH somehow represent the median American opinion

  9. Interest Groups: An Overview • The term interest group refers to virtually any voluntary association that seeks to publicly promote and create advantages for its cause • Have grown rapidly since the 1960. • Examples of interest groups?

  11. Institutional v. Membership Interests • Institutional Interests are individuals or organizations representing other organizations. • I.e: General Motors • Usually interested in bread-and-butter issues • They do not just represent business, but also governments, foundations and universities.

  12. Institutional v. Membership Interests • We have a reputation as a nation of joiners. • What is this a reflection of? • We are more likely than Europeans to think that organized activity is an effective way to influence the national government.

  13. Incentives to Join • Solidary Incentives: Sense of pleasure/companionship that arises our of meeting together in small groups. • Material Incentives: Money or things valued in monetary terms.

  14. Material Incentives • They provide members low-cost life insurance, mail-order discount drugs, group travel plans… • 45% of our nations 50 and older population belong to AARP. • That’s one in ever 4 registered voters • Do you think they influence public policy?

  15. Tonight’s Homework • Choose one of the interest groups on page 264 or one that you are interested in learning about. • What, if any, influence do each of these lobbies wield in your state? • Since lobbyists groups have proliferated, so you think they are too powerful?

  16. Purposive v Ideological Incentives • Purposive: A benefit that comes from serving a cause or principle. • Ideological Interest Groups: Political organizations that attract members by appealing to their political convictions or principles.
