  5. A little history about IT in Michigan • New state agency by Executive Order in 2001 • Consolidated IT services from 19 agencies into a single department • Funded by agencies • Single control point for all IT spending

  6. Behind the scenes… • We support and maintain: • Over 800 critical business applications • 58,163 desktop computers • 1,305 telecommunication locations • 19 state agencies But to the public we are Michigan.gov

  7. Whenever a citizen… • Files an income tax return • Pays or receives child support • Wins the Lottery wants to start a business • Compares schools • Applies for a drivers license…or gets pulled over by a state trooper …Technology makes it happen! But our greatest task is our greatest challenge…

  9. Our defining industry has defined our economy • Michigan has more automotive-related jobs than any other state • The automotive sector is struggling, and Michigan is feeling the pain 28,000 workers lost their jobs when GM closed Buick City in Flint Where do we go from here?

  11. Jobs today – Jobs tomorrow Governor’s vision: Transform Michigan’s economy • Create jobs today • Invest in all our people • Diversify economy to create jobs tomorrow The road to recovery

  12. Action Step Create jobs by sparking economic activity • Accelerate permit process by as much as 66% • Apply, pay, receive! The State now has 23 permits available online for end-to-end processing and that number is growing • Tax id process needed to do business in Michigan has been streamlined from 6 to 8 weeks to 48 hours The Flint Engine Plant received its permit in 29 days, a process that normally takes 18 months www.michigan.gov/mitaps

Action Step Create jobs • Entrepreneurial “best practices” on the “Be Your Own Boss” website • 10,000+ average hits per month • Web-based business start-up wizard • 34,000+ average hits per month From employers to employees, the State is taking action www.michigan.gov/businessstartupwww.michigan.gov/beyourownboss

Action Step Connect workers to today’s jobs • 43,000 jobs available • 660,000 resumes online Last month…. • Searches by employers: 89,058 • Electrical engineer resumes posted: 601 • Engineer job postings: 964 • Internship opportunities • Tool kit for resume writing, cover letters and job interviews The quality of our workforce will bring employers to the State www.michigan.gov/miintern www.michiganworks.org

Action Step Invest in our people through education • New $4,000 Michigan Merit Award Scholarship • Goal: double number of college grads in ten years • Be the best educated workforce in the nation • Rigorous core curriculum for high schools that includes four credits of math and three credits of science beginning in 2008 And with an educated workforce, anything is possible

Action Step Diversify Michigan’s economy • 1,000 bio-based fuel pumps by 2008 • Michigan farms are producing the crops • Businesses are building production facilities throughout the State • Auto companies are manufacturing alternative fuel vehicles • Corn and soybean farmers are harvesting economic gold • New bio-products can replace petrochemical plastics with unlimited opportunities for use, including construction and solid heating fuel And with all of these steps comes economic renewal

We have the resources these companies need
