  2. manufacturing Manufacturing is the process of making goods by hand or with machines. What do you think we manufacture in Alabama? Turn and talk.

  3. abolitionist Abolitionists were people who wanted to abolish or end slavery. If you were president, what would you do to keep the abolitionists happy and the slave owners happy? Turn and talk.

  4. tariff A tariff is a tax on goods that are brought into one country from another to be sold. If you were living in Alabama and you wanted to trade cotton with Britain, would you want a low or high tariff?

  5. inaugurate Inaugurate means to install in office with a ceremony. Name some people who have been inaugurated into office. Turn and talk.

  6. regiment A regiment is a unit of soldiers. Where might you see a regiment? Turn and talk.

  7. casualty A casualty is a person who is injured, killed, or captured during a war. Have you ever known someone who was considered a casualty? Turn and talk.

  8. freedmen Freedmen were African Americans who had once been enslaved. What do you think was the first thing freedmen wanted to do once they were no longer enslaved? Turn and talk.

  9. sharecropper Sharecroppers farmed land that belonged to someone else. Do you think sharecroppers were wealthy or poor? Why? Turn and talk.

  10. scalawag Reconstruction was a time of change for most African Americans. They began taking office in government positions. Scalawags were Southerners who supported Reconstruction. Do you think scalawags were considered to be traitors? Why or why not? Turn and talk.

  11. carpetbagger Carpetbaggers were mostly Northerners who had moved to the South after the war and supported Reconstruction. Remember: Reconstruction was a time of change for most African Americans. Do you think everyone supported Reconstruction like scalawags and carpetbaggers?
