  1. IAABO #6 February 3, 2008

  2. Meeting Topics • Announcements • Cancer Awareness • February 2008 Interpreter’s Bulletin • Summer Camps – UMass Lowell June 27,28,29 • Bd. 6 Camp – Dates not confirmed • McDonnell & IAABO Scholarship Opportunities • Reminders & Observations • Play Situations • Guest Clinician

  3. Reminders • Know the number of fouls on the key players and how many YOU called on that player • The buzzer/horn ends the period, not the whistle. • When communicating with the scorers regarding the number of fouls, ask for the “number of team fouls” and not “are we in the bonus?” • Kicking violation must be intentional and includes the whole leg. • Eye Black is illegal

  4. Reminders • Dunking before game - player or team technical? - applied to team total? - 2 free throws plus ball at division line or do we start game with jump ball after the free throws? - who can shoot the free throws? - indirect or direct to head coach? - can the coach stand in the coaching box? - when is the AP arrow set?

  5. PCA • Learn to accept the ball/action when it enters your PCA • Learn to give up ball/action when it enters your partner’s area • Learn to expand your vision and thereby improve your crew coverage

  6. Play Situation • A1 is out of bounds for a throw-in • B1 reaches through the boundary plane and knocks the ball from A1 • Ruling? • Technical Foul AND Delay of Game Warning

  7. Shot Clock Situation • A1 is dribbling ball near division line in the front court. • Shot clock is winding down when B1 steals ball and heads to their basket. • As B1 begins their attempt for the try (ball is not released), the shot clock horn is sounded. • B1 continues his try and is fouled and the try is good. • How do we handle?

  8. Shot Clock Ruling • Ignore horn and allow play to continue. • Remind coaches that only the officials’ whistle (not horn) stops play except for end of periods • Remind shot clock operator to reset on a steal • If official inadvertently blows whistle when horn is sounded: • Whistle causes play to be dead immediately • Since ball was not released when whistle sounded, there is no try and no foul and no score. • Resume from point of interruption to team in control for throw-in • Have a calm chat with the shot clock operator

  9. Injured Player Situation • Situation – A1 jumps to secure a rebound during a missed try by A2. A1 falls to the floor and turns ankle. B1 secures rebound and begins a fast break. How do we handle this? • New Trail stays with player to assess if there is immediate need for medical attention. • If yes, blow whistle and stop action • If no, allow action to continue and ???

  10. Injured Player • Allow offense to continue progress to the basket. • If offense stops progress to call a play, blow whistle • If offense passes to teammate for 3-point attempt, or to a teammate in the 3-second area for a 2-point attempt, allow this to occur. • Once the try is attempted, how do we handle?? - if rebound by defense, blow whistle - if rebound by offense and ball is put right back-up, while player is in air, allow and then blow whistle - if rebound by offense and player returns to the floor, blow whistle - if rebound bounces to area away from basket, allow ball to be controlled and then blow whistle

  11. Play Situation • Official gives wrong info during free throw attempt – indicates 2 shots rather than 1-1 • A2 misses first attempt and B2 or A2 rebounds while others do nothing. How do we handle? • A2 misses first attempt and B2 or A2 rebounds while others attempt to secure rebound. How do we handle?

  12. Backcourt Pressure Trail to New Lead • try for goal is good – move to free throw line extended • assess defensive pressure – stay in backcourt and move to 28ft mark. • as ball moves up the court, move to division line and then to 28ft mark in front court and then to end line • help your partner

  13. Play Situation • Bd. 6 Super Bowl Crew • Referee – T.J Calabrese • Back Judge – Ray Baron • Linesman – Bill Hankard • Umpire - Greg Pac • Field Judge – “Bullet”

  14. Play Situation • As time expires in the 4th quarter, Manning connects with Burress for a touchdown to tie the score 23–23. • On the try for the game winning PAT, a bad snap forces Feagles to run for the PAT but Feagles fumbles the ball at the 3 yd. line. • The Patriots can’t control the fumbled ball and force it across the goal line into their own end zone where the Patriots recover. • Ruling?

  15. Bd. 6 Super Bowl Ruling • TJ assembles the crew and they rule that the recovery attempt by the Patriots provided a new force causing the ball to roll across the goal line where it was recovered by the Patriot's.  • Therefore by rule when a player forces the ball from the field of play across his own goal line (in this case by a new force to a grounded loose ball) and the ball becomes dead in that team’s possession, it is a safety. • The Giants are awarded 1 point for the safety • Game Over - Giants 24  -  Patriots 23.

  16. Summary Thoughts • Finish strong • Attend post season and tournament games • Evaluate your year • Set goals for next year
