The Enlightenment Era How Many Philosophers does it take to Enlighten…Nevermind
The Enlightenment • An 18th Century European movement in which thinkers attempted to apply the principles of reason and the scientific method to all aspects of society. • The Skinny: People started to question whether or not the King/Government really was put there by God
Thomas Hobbes Does this collar make me less attractive… honestly? • The Leviathan • “To escape such a bleak life, people gave up their rights to a strong ruler. In exchange, they gained law and order.” • This agreement was known as the Social Contract
John Locke TJ was right… Happiness is better… that bastard • Opponent of Hobbes • “…people are born free and equal with three natural rights-life, liberty and property.” • Government’s purpose was to protect these rights
The Philosophes • Paris was the hub for new thought and Philosophes were the ones expressing ideas • Philosophes used 5 concepts to form philosophies: Reason, Nature, Happiness, Progress and Liberty
Voltaire Frederick is trippin’…the ladies love my poetry • Used a “Pen” name • Published over 70 books on politics, philosophy, history, fiction and drama • He was disliked by many in power • He called Frederick the Great a “nasty monkey.”
Baron de Montesquieu I took this picture in hopes that I might end up on a coin… heads! • Aside from this cool name, the Baron came up with the concept of “Separation of Powers.” • “Power should be a check to power”
Jean Jacques Rousseau It should be a crime to look this good… someone dial 911 • “The only good government was one that was freely formed by the people and guided by the ‘general will’ of society - a direct democracy.”
Other Major Achievements I’m so good I can write without looking • Mary Wollstonecraft – A Vindication of the Rights of Woman • Her daughter wrote Frankenstein • Denis Diderot – The Encyclopedia • Baroque Composers – Amadeus Mozart, Franz Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven
Other Important Facts • Salons become a hotspot for smart and artistic people • Kids were treated more like kids and less like adults • Religion was questioned • People began to believe in themselves…they didn’t look to the church or king for personal pride
