  1. Dr. Fabio de Sousa Menezes works with the discovery of new leads from medicinal plants (intact species) from Ireland, South America, Serbia and Thailand, aiming among other things, to achieve the isolation and validation of new compounds against several different pharmacological targets. The idea can start with any ethnopharmacological information and the goal is to finish with the pharmaceutical development of new products. His work is in the field of Applied Pharmacognosy and his research is under the NPDD group interests.Natural Products as a Source for Drug Discovery. In TCD the fundamental goal of the research in the Natural products Drug Discovery Group (NPDDG) is the isolation of new chemical entities and the evaluation of their pharmacological activity and potential as new therapeutic agents for a range of diseases. Natural Product Drug Discovery Group: Dr. Helen Sheridan (HS), Mrs Ingrid Hook (IH), Dr. John J. Walsh (JJW), Dr. Neil Frankish (NF), Dr. Fabio de Sousa Menezes (FdeSM), Ciara Smyth (CS) (Research associate). FdeSM Research Interests: Evaluation of essential oil-containing plants against bacteria, fungi and different cancer types. Evaluation of medicinal plants leading to the isolation and identification of compounds used for the treatment of different types of cancer. Evaluation of medicinal plants leading to the isolation and identification of compounds used for the treatment of diabetes. Evaluation of medicinal plants leading to the isolation and identification of compounds bearing anti-virus activity.
