  2. Electromagnetic Spectrum • Electromagnetic Spectrum-The frequency range of electromagnetic waves.] • Electromagnetic spectrum is just another way of referring to multiple types of radiation as a group.

Levels on the Electromagnetic Spectrum • Radio: These waves are emitted not only through radio, but through stars and gases in space. • Microwaves: Used by astronomers to know more about our galaxy, as well as nearby ones. • Infared: This is what our skin emits. This is why we can be seen at night with night-vision goggles. • Visible: This is what our eyes see. Visible radiation is emitted by fast-moving particles hitting other particles. • Ultraviolet: Also called UV radiation. Stars and other “hot” objects in space emit Ultraviolet/UV rays. • X-rays: Hot gases in the universe emit x-rays. X-rays are used to take a look at bones and teeth when you’re injured. • Gamma-rays: Radioactive materials –whether natural, or produced by a power plant– can emit gamma-rays. The biggest gamma-ray generator is the universe itself.

  4. Transparent, Translucent, & Opaque • Transparent: See-through or clear; light can pass through it easily. • Ex: A normal window • Translucent: Emits light; not as clear, or see-through as transparent. Not as easy to see shapes or figures through it. • Ex: A stained glass window • Opaque: Reflects light. Nothing can be seen through it. • Ex: Wooden window shutters
