  1. Rejuvenating Congregations Building Sacred Communities

  2. Synagogue Trends for Members • People postpone membership until they have a compelling reason to join. • People want to join, but costs are prohibitive. • Once people join, they often feel their needs are not being met and it is too much money to spend in a place that they don’t feel a sense of belonging. • Members don’t feel part of the community – and leave within 6-8 years of joining the congregation.

  3. Synagogue Trends for Communications • Relying only on traditional methods (i.e. - newsletters, flyers) • Relying only on social media methods (i.e. - website, blog, Facebook) • Print communications are not organized or easy to read. Websites don’t represent communities well. They are often out of date and stagnant.

  4. Synagogue Trends for Programs • Programs repeated year after year and attended by the same people. • Leaders do not take the interests of members into consideration. • Members are not greeted warmly (or at all) when they attend programs. • Programs are not offered at the right day or time. • Babysitting is not available making it difficult for young adults to attend.

  5. Synagogues of Tomorrow “The new synagogue we envision is a spiritual center for all those who set foot inside it.”* It is a KehillahKedosha– a sacred community where: • relationships are paramount • worship is engaging • everyone is learning • repairing the world is a community effort • healing is offered • personal and institutional transformation are embraced.” - The Spirituality of Welcoming: How to Transform Your Synagogue Into A Sacred Community, by Dr. Ron Wolfson.
