  1. H2S Analyser Update • Test Method changes • Vapour Phase Processor (VPP) Description • VPP Upgrade Kit options • New spares & accessories • Logistics

  2. IP 570/12A Section 6 – Sample handling • Sampling requirements in the method are challenging, however situations which expose the sample to heat, vacuum, air and agitation will potentially lower the test results through loss of H2S prior to measurement • The intent of the method is to safeguard the sample through some common sense rules • Minimise vapour loss by avoiding drip sampling • Do not transfer the sample from one container to another • Minimise ullage (headspace) i.e. 95% full container • Inert container – epoxy lined metal can or borosilicate glass • Gas tight closure • First measurement if a dedicated sample is not taken • Test immediately or within 72 hours if stored in a refrigerator • This presents a challenge to industry who often utilise drip sampling and routinely transfer the sample from one container to another

  3. IP 570/12A Section 6 – Sample handling ISO 8217 wording 4 Sampling • The sampling of petroleum fuels for analysis shall be carried out in accordance with the procedures given in ISO 13739 or an equivalent national standard. Where specific sampling requirements are documented in the referenced test methods, these shall be adhered to. • The first sentence, read in isolation, obliges the reader to follow ISO 13739, which is not suitable for sampling for H2S! (it recommends the transfer of samples from one container to another and promotes the use of drip sampling – both techniques will reduce the H2S present in the sample) • For IP 570 the second sentence is of paramount importance because it directs the reader to adhere to the specific requirements in the test method (as per the previous slide).

  4. IP 570/12A Note 3 – Interferences Introduction of the Vapour Phase Processor (VPP) In response to the known effect of Thiols (Mercaptans) or alkyl Sulphides, see IP 570/12A Note 3, the new Vapour Phase Processor (VPP) was developed to separate interfering chemical species, by passing evolved gases through a cold filter. This proven process ensures Hydrogen Sulfide is the sole chemical species to pass over the electrochemical sensor.

  5. IP 570/12A Procedure A & B The H2S Task Group within the EI has revised IP 570, based on two procedures: Procedure A requires the use of the VPP with the H2S Analyser Procedure B Original Procedure, without VPP. A precision study for Procedure A was successfully completed by the EI in February and the research report showed Procedure A achieved precision similar to Procedure B. Based on this work the new test method IP 570/12A is available for purchase on the Energy Institute website. Procedure A is also now the industry recommended test for both Distillate and Residual Fuel Samples.

  6. Upgrade Kits options for IP 570/12A The SA4000-2 H2S Analyser, when combined with the VPP, is now supplied compliant for IP 570/12A Procedure A. All existing SA4000-0 Seta H2S Analysers can be upgraded for Procedure A compliance, by either a return to factory service or locally by a Seta authorised service partners.

  7. New spares & Accessories Cartridges Supplied in a transit pack No expiry expected Single use

  8. Logistics • Contact Seta Sales Team with your serial number for a quote • You will be quoted the correct kit to order • Place order • Receive order acknowledgement – this will advise you when you should send in your H2S Analyser • Obtain a returns number • Send the analyser in quoting the returns number • Expect 5 to 10 working day turnaround, unless other work is required

  9. Logistics at Seta • Assess functional condition of analyser • Report findings, maybe issue a quote for additional work required • Carry out the upgrade • Check and adjust analyser • Flow rate • Gas calibration • Test 2mg/kg Verification fluid • Units which fail may require a new sensor • Report findings, maybe issue a quote • Fit new sensor (may require additional time) • Return Analyser
