What’s BATS The goal of BATS is to train students to become practitioners using behavior analysis to improve the lives of children with autism.
What’s BATS • The Behavior Analysis Training System (BATS) is a 2-year track in the Behavior Analysis Program of WMU’s Psychology Department. • Based on the service provider/practitioner model. • At the end of your time in BATS You will meet the requirements to be able to take the test to become a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)
What’s BATS BATS is made up of: • Behavioral Boot Camp • Taking Classes • Principals of Behavior Quizzes • Teaching Classes • An Autism Practicum • BRSS.
BOOTCAMP • An intensive 9 week training program • 3 hours per day, 5 days per week • Aimed to attain a high level of understanding of the principles of behavior • Basically you take more intense versions of PSY 610 (Conditioning and Learning) and PSY 671 (Higher Order Behavior Processes) in only 9 weeks.
Taking Classes • Students usually take 1-2 classes per semester. • Principles of Behavior quizzes (based on what you will learn in PSY 610) are also given periodically.
Teaching Classes As a member of the BATS program you will spend two semesters teaching an undergraduate course in the principles and applications of Behavior Analysis.
Autism Practicum As a first year graduate student in the BATS program you will be expected to work with the diagnosed with autism either at WoodsEdge Learning Center in Carmen’s Early Childhood Developmental Delayed classroom, or at the Kalamazoo Autism Center.
Autism Practicum • In your second year in BATS you will become the case coordinator for a few of these students at which time you will oversee their curriculum. • You will also be supervising the undergraduate students while attaining Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention skills.
Jobs After Graduation • Although learning to design and implement, programs to teach/train children diagnosed as autistic is the purpose of BATS there are many other opportunities for BATS graduates. • If you go to http://www.abainternational.org/ and click on the jobs link you can see the job openings listed by the Association for Behavior Analysis International.
