  2. President’s Message By Renae Paulson, RN March 4, 2010 Dear RNS Members and Friends,; March is Women’s History Month. We have a rich history of women paving the way in our Society over the years. There are too many courageous women to mention each one, but I want to mention a few of the pioneers: Wilma Rudolph - Athlete Josephine Baker - Performer Virginia Woolf - Novelist Frida Kahlo - Artist Sally Ride - Astronaut Elizabeth Cady Stanton - Activist Hillary Clinton - Secretary of State Susan B. Anthony – Civil Rights And my personal favorite: Amelia Earhart - Aviator I am reminded of a report I did on Amelia Earhart in the 4th grade. We had to make a shoebox diorama of our hero. Oh how I admired how she pursued her dream of flying in a man’s world. She was so adventurous and brave to me. She was always striving to be the best, to live her passion. It was very difficult for me to comprehend that she disappeared on her solo voyage to fly around the world and that she was never found. Her short life, and all that she accomplished, continues to encourage others. WOW, what an imprint she made on our history. Our heroes come in all sizes and shapes and in all kinds of places and events. The history of RNS goes back to the ’70.s and as I reviewed the Thomas Gucker award recipients, I am reminded of the many heroes we have had in this organization. RNS continues to need volunteers who will give of themselves to improve the circumstances within our communities, to impact the training and direction of the nursing profession, and to uphold the values and practice of medicine. Many thanks to those of you willing to continue to serve on the RNS Board of Directors and to those that are responding to the nominating committee, chaired by Carmen Gutierrez, with Donna Pope and Dale Prince assisting. I am confident that you will experience joy serving on the Board of Directors of this most esteemed organization. The 2011-2012 terms begin on 1-1-2011. Make plans now to come to the RNS meetings in 2010 and mark your calendar for the 4th Thursday of every month to attend the RNS meeting. Make sure that your individual membership dues are paid for 2010 by the end of this month to ensure that your name will be included in the RNS membership directory. I would like to thank our February speaker, Anita Correa, P.T., M.P. T, for her presentation on the Walking Recovery Program at Long Beach Memorial Hospital. “Thank you” to the following vendors for their continuing generosity. Francine Aron of Casa Colina, Continuity Care home Nurses, and Dr. Heskiaoff/Barbara Tucker. Stay well and I hope to see you at the RNS meeting on March 25, 2010. Renae Paulson, RN RNS President:
