  1. The Individual oral commentary Definition of Fear: False Evidence Appearing Real.

  2. Relax… the IOC is actually fun and easy… Analysis gave me great freedom of emotions and fantastic confidence. I felt I had served my time as a puppet. HedyLamarr

  3. What is the IOC or any commentary about? • A commentary is basically an analysis of how the writer has constructed meaning for the reader. • You consider what literary techniques have been employed to create meaning. • PUNCTUATION; EMOTIVE LANGUAGE; REPETITION; PERSONIFICATION; METAPHORS; ATMOSPHERE; FIRST-PERSON; STRUCTURE; FORESHADOWING; IRONY; SYMBOLISM …. • It is your job to discuss character; setting; theme/s; and the author’s style.

  4. How do I begin? • Read extract more than once. • Annotate!!! • For your IOC decide which story the extract originates and what part of the text it has been taken from. If you are not exactly sure, state either – the orientation, rising action, climax or conclusion. • Identify the main content of the extract… is it character development? Is it setting? Is it climax and tension? • Use this then as the focus for your commentary. E.g. ‘In this extract the author has developed the unreliability of the narrator…. This has been achieved through the author’s use of punctuation, structure and personification of the supernatural…

  5. Decide on a structure for your analysis • Focus on three main points… consider either: • Dividing the extract into sections and discussing it chronologically… e.gThis extract can be divided into two sections… The first section is the narrator’s desire to confirm their sophistication and intelligence. The second section reveals the narrator’s description of the setting and it acts as a doppelganger for their preoccupation with the supernatural. • Dividing the commentary into techniques the author used to achieve meaning… e.g. This extract has been constructed through the use of contrasting sentence structures to reveal elements of character; emotive language with connotations of the supernatural and first-person narrative highlighting the author’s confidential tone. • You then use this to help you structure your response!

  6. PUTTING YOUR IDEAS TOGETHER • Now that you have a structure in place you can proceed and follow it. • You must use the language of literature. • You must use quotes • Make sure that your sentences are constructed using the following formula… • The author’s personification of ____________ highlights __________ • Use of em-dashesimply ……………. • The supernatural atmosphere is connoted through the repetitive ….. • Your sentences must do more than just state techniques are tell the story… if you use the language of literature you cannot go wrong.

  7. Important words to use • Implies • Connotations • Highlights • Emphasises • Reveals • Invites the reader • Illustrates • Establishes • Supports • …………………………

  8. Don’t forget to conclude • The conclusion is the last thing that the reader/ audience is left with. • Consider using is as a separate little commentary – a mini commentary if you like. If this was the only thing you were saying about this extract, what would you say? • Make sure that you at least: • Restate where the extract comes from • The author’s name • What meaning is created in the extract • The main techniques the author has used to construct this meaning • If it is the IOC you may also want to make reference to other texts, by the same author which are similar and why they are similar.
