  1. Life Sciences at NSLS-II Update Wayne A. Hendrickson EFAC 23 April 2009

  2. Responsibilities as Associate Director for Life Sciences Strategic planning for the use of NSLS-II in life sciences research Coordination with life sciences community and representation of needs Coordination with potential funding agencies Representation of life sciences needs in NSLS-II design and construction Building of life sciences facilities at NSLS-II, including beamlines Planning for a smooth transition from NSLS to NSLS-II in life sciences Planning for successful operation of NSLS-II for the life sciences

  3. Planning Activities • Life Sciences Workshop (15-16 January 2008) • White Paper (Finalized for April NIH Workshop) • MX LOI Proposal reviewed favorably by EFAC • Technical Working Group for MX at NSLS-II • Visit to Soliel / SLS / ESRF / Diamond • Coordination with JPSI planning • 23-24 July 2009 Microbeams Workshop

  4. Proposed NSLS-II Beamlines 20.1 Beamline Equivalents

  5. Biology Village Concept • Structural/Molecular Biology: • For the same protein or complex: • Small-angle x-ray scattering: low-resolution structure, static & dynamic • EXAFS: metal active site environment, static & dynamic • MX: atomic-resolution structure, static & dynamic • Chemical/Structural Imaging: • In a single biological cell: • Infrared imaging: chemical imaging of biological cells • Full-field, soft x-ray TXM: nanoscale 3D sub-structure • X-ray spectromicroscopy: 3D nanoscale chemical imaging of organic components • X-ray fluorescence microprobe: 3D trace element mapping Promote synergy between life sciences users and explore interactions with other communities

  6. Prospective Dual Canted Undulator Beamlines for MX Inboard Beam Endstation Outboard Beam Endstation FOE Access corridor Courtesy of Lewis Doom & Michael Loftus meters K-B mirror system for inboard beam K-B mirror system for outboard beam Deflecting mirror pair for outboard beam Double crystal mono for outboard beam Experimental apparatus for inboard beam Experimental apparatus for outboard beam Deflecting mirror pair for inboard beam Double crystal mono for inboard beam •1.5 m U20 undulators canted by 2 mrad • Horizontally-deflecting flat mirror pair for further separation of beams • User accommodation issues, eyes on neighboring bend section

  7. NSLS Transition Beamlines for Life & Environmental Sciences

  8. Funding Opportunities • Pan-NIH Initiative • 27-28 April 2008 NIH/DOE Workshop • 11-12 September 2008 NIH/DOE Imaging Workshop • 19 February 2009 NSLS-II visit to NIH • 4-5 June 2009 • NIH component of US Stimulus Package ($10B) • High-end Instrumentation • Construction funding prospects (LOB) • Pharmaceutical Partners • Not-for-profit Partners

  9. NIH Stimulus Funding Prospects High-End Instrumentation Proposals (S10)

  10. Summary • Mission Need for NSLS-II based on physical sciences • Mission realization requires success in life sciences • We see exciting life sciences opportunities at NSLS-II
