  1. Día de la Raza Día de La Raza translated is Columbus Day.

  2.  Christopher Columbus Christopher Columbus • born in the Republic of Genoa. • Between October 31, 1450 and October 30, 1451. • He was an Italian explorer, navigator, and a colonizer. we call it, north western Italy.

  3. However people call him several namesfor example......... • Italian: Cristoforo Colombo • Catalan: CristòforColom • Spanish: Cristóbal Colón • Portuguese: Cristóvão Colombo • Latin: Christophorus Columbus • Genoese: ChristoffaCorombo • Click here for a 5 minute clip for a little song.

  4. The real part • Columbus planned and estimated the distance from the Canary Islands to Japan, (estimate was about 3,700 km, or 2,300 statute miles.) • The correct figure is 19,600 km (12,200 mi), or about 12,000 km along a great circle. • No ship in the 15th century could carry enough food and fresh water for such a long voyage. • The dangers involved in navigating through the uncharted ocean would have been formidable. • TheCatholic Monarchs having completed an expensive war in the Iberian Peninsula, were desperate for a competitive edge over other European countries to trade with the Indies. Columbus promised such an advantage.

  5. Proposal • Columbus presented his plans toKing John II • Proposed that the king should equip sturdy ships and grant Columbus one year's time to sail out into the Atlantic to search for a western route to the Orient, and return. • Columbus requested him to be made "Great Admiral of the Ocean", appointed governor of any and all lands he discovered, and given one-tenth of all revenue from those lands. • The king submitted Columbus's proposal to his experts, who rejected it.

  6. 7 Years later • After continually lobbying at the Spanish court and two years of negotiations, he finally had success in 1492. Ferdinand and Isabella had just conquered Granada, the last Muslim stronghold on the Iberian Peninsula, and they received Columbus in Córdoba, in the Alcázar castle.

  7. The trip • Between 1492 and 1503, Columbus completed four round-trip voyages between Spain and the Americas, all of them under the sponsorship of the Crown of Castile.
