SRNWP-NT Mini-Workshop 2004 Overview and Future Cooperation Plans

The SRNWP-NT mini-workshop scheduled for autumn 2004 in Toulouse was cancelled due to a scheduling clash with the ECMWF 2004 Seminar. Despite this setback, all major SRNWP-NT groups were represented, including COSMO, UKMO, Aladin, and HIRLAM. Key discussion topics included semi-Lagrangian issues and the re-emphasized interface of physico-dynamics. Additionally, the workshop aimed to propose joint discussions and experiments on specific scientific interests among the participant groups. Plans for a new SRNWP-NT mini-workshop are proposed for autumn 2006.

SRNWP-NT (Numerical Techniques) • Mini-workshop SRNWP-NT 2004: - scheduled in Toulouse in autumn 2004 - cancelled due to overlapping with ECMWF 2004 Seminar - Most SRNWP-NT groups were represented: Cosmo: L. Bonaventura UKMO: N. Wood Aladin: P. Bénard ECMWF: C. Temperton, M. Hortal, N. Wedi, A. Beljaars HIRLAM: many, but no speaker

SRNWP-NT (Numerical Techniques) - Same areas of interest are still valid: semi-Lagrangian issues (conservation, positiveness) physico-dynamics interface is a reactivated subject - All NH models for NWP are in Euler system - Re-emerging subject of discussion: Euler : non-symmetric solvers or iterated implicit schemes? ECMWF+Aladin+UKMO vs.COSMO and US people

SRNWP-NT (Numerical Techniques) • Proposal of joint discussions/experiments: - idea: work in common on very specific scientific statements of declared interest - bi- or tri-lateral cooperations are planned - The inquiry was released in march 2004 - 5 replies with proposal of common studies - now the concrete cooperations must be built

  4. SRNWP-NT (Numerical Techniques) • Next SRNWMP-NT mini-workshop - Scheduled in autumn 2006 (?) - where (?) Toulouse still candidate if needed.
