  2. Vocabulary words you need to know! • What is an ethnic group? • A group of people who share a common ancestry. • This may be by religion, language, or race. • What is ethnic cleansing? • The mass expulsion and killing of an ethnic group by another ethnic group in an area.

History • After World War I, five ethnically distinct countries were brought together to form Yugoslavia. • Yugoslavia was a dictatorship controlled by a man name “Tito.” • He kept Yugoslavia together by stabilizing ethnic groups. • After his death, this country began to deteriorate. • Countries wanted their independence.

  5. Groups in war • Bosnian Muslims • Bosnian Serbs – Orthodox Christian • Croats – Roman Catholic • It was not just ethnic groups, but also ethnic and religious groups.

The Conflict • Slovenia and Croatia declared independence. • This did not go over well. • This caused fighting to erupt. • Both Croatia and Bosnia-Hertzegovina had Serb populated provinces. • Ethnic cleansing took place to rid these places of non-Serbs. • They wanted to create pure nation states consisting of just one ethnic group.

How did the conflict end? • The UN imposed economic sanctions on Bosnia. • They sent troops made up of Europeans. • They did not supply weapons to any player. • They wanted the US to get involved, but they had just come out of the Gulf War, and they felt it was Europe’s job to deal with it. • NATO began using air strikes. • This induced Serbia to seek an end to the war signing a peace agreement. • Economic sanctions were lifted. • Troops from the U.S. and Europe were sent in to establish peace.
