Interview Highlights While people expressed trust in PEPS to launch a broad-based civic dialogue in San Francisco to support public schools, they also expressed skepticism about whether and how, as a city, we can overcome barriers to civic engagement that come from racism, classism, and related systemic social and political divisions.

  4. Interview Highlights People especially expressed interest in developing clear, positive, practical goals—not just nice words—that capture our imagination and inspire action.

  5. Interview Highlights People require that these public dialogues engage everyone—not just the usual suspects—and that all of us become better informed about our schools’ successes and challenges.

  6. Community Dialogue Results Adequate and Equitable Funding Ensure that our school children benefit fromequitable funding for every student and every school site.

  7. Community Dialogue Results That’s Our School! Create vital connections between schools and their neighborhoods so that our schools are not strange islands in the middle of our neighborhoods but are instead a proud part of our neighborhood landscapes.

  8. Community Dialogue Results Good Stories Tell good, true stories about our public school children, educators, and families—formally and informally, every day.

  9. Anomalies Student Voice, Student Rights Peaceful environment / less violence. [Youth] “having a voice for what we want.” Engage students: compassionate engagement with students having problems in order to keep them in school.

  10. Anomalies Communication within School Communicate & share information so everyone knows what’s going on in schools; Increase communication between parents and schools: especially increasing access to information for monolingual parents and increasing parent involvement with students.

  11. Anomalies Respect and Support for Teachers Commit to supporting high quality teachers by removing stress and pressure on them related to job security, pay, etc.; Want teachers who CARE about their kids; Respect for teachers / teacher training / teacher support; Reward teachers.

  12. Lessons Learned Going into this project: We knew there was a weak connection between the general public (especially non parents) and our schools. We knew that, episodically, San Francisco successfully taps into our populations overall good will toward public schools.

  13. Lessons Learned Over the course of the project: We learned how strong the good sentiment, political ideals, and enthusiasm are toward public schools.

  14. Lessons Learned There are untapped resources in our city and that we need to improve the structures to use those untapped resources.

  15. Lessons Learned There is no substitute for community outreach, despite the fact that it’s slow, personal, and constant. The power of asking people, “What do you think?” and telling stories is crucial; the power of nurturing relationships is invaluable.

  16. Lessons Learned There needs to be more coordination among the organizations that support our public schools.

  17. Lessons Learned Our public schools really do reflect the bonds between us.

  18. Action Phase Change Process Model Further refine and define the desired outcomes of each of the major themes (What is the change we seek?); Identify what is and isn’t working to achieve the change including: creating a map of existing efforts—successful and otherwise—and working to understand obstacles and barriers to change; and Generate 3 to 5 wild ideas—actionable steps—that would unleash the desired change.

  20. Join Us We invite you to join us in supporting our public schools. This is not about school reform, or improving the education system. This is about the community being better friends of our schools.
