  1. GCSE English PreparationGuidelines.

  2. Paper 1: Non-Fiction, Media and Information Question 1 Students will be asked to summarise specific aspects of the text. In order to do so, they need to: Read the question. Read the text. Highlight the parts of the text which answer the question. Re-read the question and highlight the key words. Highlight the parts of the text which answer the question. Write two or three paragraphs. Do not use quotes. Do not concentrate on details or examples. RE-ORDER the material.

  3. Question 2 Candidates will be expected to comment on the text by: • Explaining relevant points. • Discussing the effectiveness of the writer. • Using short quotations to support the points made.

  4. Question 3 This question assesses the candidate’s ability to: - Inform - Explain - Describe. The question is marked for Writing.

  5. Question 3 Cont. An example of this type of question is: A magazine, designed to appeal to all age groups, is publishing a series of articles called ‘It means so much to me’. You have been asked to contribute an article. Write your article. Give a detailed description of something you value very much. Explain carefully why you value it so highly.

Question 3 Cont. • Students should: • Plan it carefully before writing. • Leave time to check response, thoroughly. • Write in paragraphs and use full stops. • Use connectives to expand sentences. • Plan and write a beginning which grabs attention. • Plan and write an ending which wraps things up or leaves the reader with a question. • Try to imagine who the readers are. Address them directly so they feel involved.

  7. GCSE English – Revision Guidelines.Paper 1: Non-Fiction, Media and Information. • Total time: 1 hour 45 minutes. • Pay close attention to time: spend no more than 35 minutes on Section A. • Leave 1 hour and 10 minutes for Section B – 35 minutes per question.

  8. Paper 2: Different Cultures, Analysis and Argument. Section A: 1Question on the 6 short stories studied in class: • Pieces of Silver • The Red Ball • The Young Couple • Leela’s Friend • Games at Twilight • The Winter Oak Section B: 2 Questions are to be attempted in this section

  9. Section A There will be a choice of 2 questions – ONLY ONE to be done. Students need to refer to TWO stories in their answer; remember to use PQE/PEE. E.g. How do two writers explore the theme of poverty, in any two stories from the list at the top of the page?. Spend 35 minutes on this question.

  10. Section B: 2 Questions are to be attempted in this section. The first will be to assess the candidate’s ability to Analyse, Review, Comment. The second, to Persuade, Argue, Advise. Some brief, stimulus material is provided to offer a little inspiration for these tasks. They need to be read carefully!

  11. Analyse = examine carefully • Review = make a judgement about something and say why you thought it was good or bad. • Comment = give your views on something. Give three or four examples with details and give your personal opinion on it.

  12. Persuade = use language and examples to get someone to believe the same as you. • Argue = give both sides of a controversial topic. • Advise = give helpful information to a person unfamiliar with a situation.
