Understanding Viruses - and Other Bad Stuff Malwareis a combination of the words “MALicious softWARE” Malware is ageneral term to describe malicious software or potentially unwanted software installed without adequate user consent
Spyware: Collects information, such as the Web sites a user visits, without adequate consent Types of Malware Virus: Program that copies itself, commonly by infecting other files in the system, which gets passed to other computers when the infected files are copied Worm: Type of virus program that can automatically distribute itself from one computer to another Trojans: Virus program that is delivered through what seems to be legitimate means, such as downloading what seems to be a useful program Adware: Program that displays advertisements Rootkits: Program whose main purpose is to hide other malware
