Cosmetic Valley • Cosmetic Valley is an area in the Paris Basin that includes • Over 400 Companies • 6 Universities • accounting for 45,000 jobs and a turnover of over 10 Billion euro/15 Billion dollars (the amount of money taken in a year) • Cosmetic Valley is a centre for specialist human resources in many businesses in the cosmetics industry from • growing aromatic plants • creating and formulating products • manufacturing perfumes and cosmetics • control testing and analysis laboratories • advertising, design and packaging. • All of these factors make the Paris Basin a major industrial centre.

Central Business District (CBD) in Paris City • Is in a section of the city north of the river Seine where busy offices, factories and shops are found. • Specialist educational and academic printing and publishing activities are located close to the Universities in the City. Example the world famous Sorbonne University • Heavy steel Manufacturing (rail, steel and oil refining) is located further out from the city. • Food processing is a major industry in the region, producing cheese, wine and vegetables.

The first Tertiary Economic Activity we will look at is... Tourism • 76 million people visit France annually, of these 45 million visit the Paris Basin and Paris City attracts nearly 30 million. • Tourism accounts for just over 25% of employment in the city region. • Tourists are attracted by the history, culture, scenery and fashion of the area.

11 SRPS FOR BODY OF THE QUESTION • Easily accessible by air, road and rail. • There are 3 major airports located in the region – Orly Airport, Beavais and Charles de Gaulle airport which make the region easily accessible to tourists. (2 MARKS) • The rail and motorway networks radiate out from the city. (2 MARKS) • The channel Tunnel from Britain to France entices more tourists from Britain to visit the region. (2 MARKS) • The Ports at Rouen and Le Harve provide another accessible root to the region for tourists. (2 MARKS)
2.There is a range of accommodation and tourist attractions to suit everyone. • South of the city lies the palace of Versailles and the world famous Euro Disney is found in the east of the city in Marne de la Valley. Euro Disney gets more that 12 million visitors each year. (2 MARKS) • Other attractions include: • The Lourve Museum (5 Million people each year) (2 MARKS) • Eiffel Tower (5.5 Million people each year) (2 MARKS) • In addition famous sites and shows include the Arc De Triomphe and Champs d’Elysees and the Moulin Rouge. (2 MARKS) • Paris is the Fashion Capital of the World home to some of the famous fashion houses like Chanel, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent are manufactured and sold in the region. (2 MARKS) • Beaches of Normandy which preserve the Battle Sites of WW2 (2 MARKS) • The Sacre Coeur Cathedral sits on top of Montmartre hill and opens every day to the public. Originally this cathedral was relatively inaccessible as it is atop the highest point in the city however a glass cable car link was built in the 1990s and has further increased the amount of visitors to this attraction. (2 MARKS)
Benefits of Tourism in the Paris Basin • In 2008 estimates show that these sites drew in over 25 million visitors. • Over 60% of visitors to the Paris Basin come from outside of France which generates over €20 billion each year. • This tourism industry is 20% of Frances total GNP which indicates how important this business is to the economy. • As a result of tourism hotels, restaurants and other spin-off industries have developed due to the demand for additional services in the region. • Towns like Reims and Epernay have grown in size due to the viticulture industry which draws in wine tasters and is home to the famous Champagne houses.
The 2nd Tertiary Economic Activity we will look at is... Transport • The development of transport infrastructure has been helped by the flat low lying landscape as well as the River Seine and its tributaries. • The French transport network radiates out from its capital city. As a result the Paris Basin is highly accessible because it is a route focus. • Paris is the central hub of the national intercity rail network. • 3major airports located in the region – OrlyAirport, Beavaisand Charles de Gaulle airport
