CBA – the positives? • Summative assessment without human marking • Formative feedback without human intervention • Enables automatic monitoring of progress • Objective (more accurate than teachers?) • Shareable • Large numbers generate statistics that enable module improvement. • Always available instant feedback!! • Piggy back on Open Source materials)
CBA - the negatives • Easiest to construct at low levels of Bloom’s taxonomy (knowledge, understanding, application, analysis synthesis and evaluation) • Front end cost (exacerbated by complexity and targeted feedback) • Fraud • Validity (real and perceived) • Interoperability (QTI standard not implemented)
CBA types Multiple choice Matching Ordering Substitution (e.g. Drag and drop) Construction (e.g. graph drawing) Completion Free entry (text, number, expression, diagram) Complexity correlates with learning power Feedback enhances learning Targeted feedback enhances learning more.

Task Explore www.open.ac.uk\openmarkexamples Choose an appropriate LO for your module, split into pairs and write either • An example of MCQ with the feedback that you would offer if the student got it wrong, or • An example of a Drag and Drop Question with the feedback that you would offer if the student got it wrong. Feedback one questions from each module team.
