  1. THE LIBRARY: A BRIEF OVERVIEW PRESENTATION FOR ERASMUS STUDENTS WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF HUELVA!!

The University of Huelva Library provides an essential service to the whole university community in the support and promotion of postgraduate and undergraduate programs, teaching and academic research. According to the UHU Charters, the Library is divided into: • MAIN LIBRARY (El Carmen Campus) • BRANCH LIBRARIES: • La Merced Library  Bussiness and Management School • La Rábida Library  Polytechnic School of Engineering • READING ROOMS (El Carmen Campus): • Law College • Nursing School • Faculty of Education • Faculty of Labour Sciences

MAIN LIBRARY • Located in El Carmen Campus • It centralizes and channels all the administrative and technical processes. • It manages and coordinates the Branch Libraries and the Reading Rooms. • It holds the most substantial collections and most of the readers´ seats • We offer a wide range of services from this library : Lending Services, In-house materials use, Reprography, Bibliographic Enquiry Service, Interlibrary Loans, … … /…

  4. … /… • It consists of three floors with 352 readers´ seats. • Most of the holdings are in free access • Parts of our collection are stored in closed depositories • There is a single Circulation Desk for loans and returns in the ground floor Library hall. • There are Information Desks in our three Reading Rooms. • Reprography: 3 photocopying machines (one in each floor)

BOOKS( Ground and Second floor) • First of all, search the OPAC (Online access public catalogue) • Most of our collections are arranged in free access • Ground Fllor  Books on Natural and Pure Sciences, Literature, History, The Arts, … • 2nd floor  Books on Economy, Law and Social Work • Books are arranged by subject matter in the shelves • Reference Works displays a REF in their shelfmark … /…

  7. … /… • Handbooks have a MAN on their shelfmark • Stored books (DEP-M) are requested in the Information Desks on the ground floor • Once you have browsed your books, place them in the trolleys near the shelves • Loans: 12 books / 14 days • Loans and returns in the Circulation Desks located in the Library hall

PERIODICAL PUBLICATIONS(First floor) • Search our collections in the OPAC • Most of the Periodicals´ holdings are in free access • Holdings are placed in different sections in the Periodicals´ Reading Room: • Daily Press • Governmental Publications • Generalities • Scientific journals • Scientific journals are divided by subject matter and then alphabetically arranged … /…

  9. … /… • Journals stored in the depositary (DEP-S) are requested in the Information Desks on the first floor. • Once you have browsed documents, place them in the trolleys you will find near the shelves • Periodical publications are excluded from loan.

  11. … /… • For special material consultation the Library has the following equipment: • 4 individual booths for audio recordings • 4 individual video booths • 1 DVD player • 1 slide projector • 8 computers with Internet access • 2 microformats readers • 1 computer for digital reproductions consultations

ELECTRONIC RESOURCES(First Floor) • Electronic books  More than 100.000 full-texts works • Electronic journals  More than 7.000 • Databases  80 databases • Internet resources a selection of of interesting websites for the university community • 8 computer with Internet access  only academic searches • Do not forget to reserve a computer seat

BRANCH LIBRARIES • Holdings specialized in the subjects lectured the faculties where these libraries areen las materias que se imparten en los respectivos centros donde se encuentran ubicadas • They are mainly in charge of the loans and in-house consultation of the holdings located within their facilities. • They also deal with quick references enquiries • There are two main libraries: La Merced Bussiness and Management School La Rábida Polytechnic School of Engineering

READING ROOMS • Located in the different colleges and faculties of El Carmen Campus • Handbooks and Recommended Readings are to be found within their facilities • They mainly deal with loans and quick reference enquiries • There are four Reading Rooms: Law College Faculty of Education Facultad de Ciencias del Trabajo y E.U. de Trabajo Social

LOCATION OF THE COLLECTIONS • The easiest and quickest way of finding a documnet is by making an enquiry into the UHU Library Catalogue • You will find OPACs ready for consultation in any of the University Library Customer Service Points. You will also be able to access to the Library Catalogue from any PC with Internet access • Check the Users´ Guide • If still you cannot find the document ask in te nearest Information Desk • Once you have located the document readers: • If the document is in free access, they will have to locate it themselves through its shelfmark • If the document is in a depositary, they will have to request it to our Library staff with it shelfmark

  16. What is the “Shelfmark”? • Shelfmark is like the address of the document. Just with this single data we will be able to locate the document within the Library facilities • Each document has a different shelfmark • Shelfmarks are placed in: Documents´ spine (spine label) OPAC – Library Catalogue 159.9 GON psi 159.9 GON psi The same information appears in the spine label up to down and in the OPAC from left to right

Books Arrangement • For most books, shelfmark is made of numbers and letters according to the following scheme: • Classification Code  UDC number (Universal Decimal Classification) which allocates a number to each subject matter • Three first letters of the author´s surname (or the title if not)  In capital letters • Three first letters of the title  Lower case letters • Sometimes, the shelfmark is preceded by acronyms which indicate the kind of work in particular  REF (Reference Works) y MAN (Handbooks) • Since books are arranged according to a subject matter classification we will find books with different titles but about the same topic in the same shelves … /…

  18. … /… • Some examples of shelfmark : • Shelfmarks are arranged in the • Shelves line by line: • Firstly the numerical line, • decimally arranged ( number by • number ) • Secondly, alphabetically arranged • the line that indicates the • surname of the author • Finally, alphabetically arranged • the line that indicates the title • of the book • MAN and REF codes which precede • the shelfmark are not taken into • account when locating the documents • In the shelves It indicates the subject matter  Zoology 59 PAR tra It indicates the author  J. Parker It indicates the title  Tratado de zoología MAN 59 PAR tra It states that the books has been recomended For a subject or course  HANDBOOKS (MANUALES) REF 7 DIC dic It states that this is a reference work such as dictionaries and enciclopaedias  REFERENCE WORKS

  19. Other locations • Apart from these classification and laying out systems, there are other locations codes to show special locations within the Main Library • These codes refers to the places where the documents are stored and precede the shelfmark:

USEFUL INFORMATION… READERS • UHU registered students are considered full right members of the Library. • If you are a first time user you will have to produce your TUO for registration. • If you do not have your TUO, you will have to produce legal evidence proving that you are a university member • We will introduce your personal details in our database • To borrow books you only need you TUO or any other legal ID.

USEFUL INFORMATION… OPENING HOURS • You can check the Opening Hours in the Library website and in the notice boards in the Library hall • Extended or special opening hours will be announce in advance with the necessary notice in our website or in the notice boards of the different Customer Service Points
