  1. 2006-2006 First Term Exam Dictation

  2. This man comes from Hong Kong, but he is one of the most well-known actors in the world. His face is easily recognisable. He has a relatively round face and a square chin. His hair is medium in length. His trademark is his big nose.

  3. What is equally recognisable is his amazing fighting style on screen. He can jump around and use things like irons, fans, vacuum cleaners and other household appliances as well as pieces of furniture as weapons. His movie characters are usually optimistic, adventurous, brave and honest. He seldom plays mean, vain or arrogant bad guys. The reason is that he wants to set a good example to young people watching his films.

  4. He has appeared in hundreds of films since the 1970s. Apart from making local films, he has also made some Hollywood films, most of which are highly successful, like Rush Hour.

  5. Apart from making films, he also works for many charities. He speaks up for conservation and other causes. He has even said that he would give half of his money away to charity when he dies. Who is this amazing person? He is Jackie Chan.

  26. Section D Quotations (@5, total 15) • a) Eddie b) Catherine c) Eddie is criticising Catherine’s behaviour. There are several things he doesn’t like: i. her clothes, ii. ‘walkin’ wavy’ and high heels, iii. Waving to people from the window. d) Eddie has just come home from work. Catherine waves to Louis, and gives Eddie her usual warm welcome. She is wearing new clothes and has a new hairstyle. At first Eddie is charmed by her appearance, but very soon he begins to criticise her in a way which might indicate sexual jealousy. In fact, he is confused: Catherine is growing up, but Eddie can’t accept it.

  27. 2. a) Eddie b) Catherine (& Beatrice) c) Vinny Bolzano, a boy who ‘snitched’ to the Immigration Office about his uncle, an illegal immigrant, who was living in his house. He was beaten by his family, and left the neighbourhood in disgrace. d) They are waiting for Beatrice’s cousins to arrive. Eddie is explaining why the family must never talk about the illegal immigrants, because the cousins may be arrested, and the family will be shamed in the community.

  28. 3) a) Marco b) Beatrice c) Marco is explaining how difficult life is in his home town, and why he needs to make money to help his wife and children, one of whom is sick. d) It is the evening of the cousins’ arrival at Eddie’s home. After a formal introduction, they are chatting about their plans. Marco is explaining his plans to Beatrice, and at the same time, giving her a bit of family information.

  29. 4) a) Eddie b) Catherine c) They are discussing Rodolfo’s behaviour and intentions towards Catherine. Catherine says that Rodolfo respects her and Eddie. She says that she likes Rodolfo. Eddie says that Roldolfo’s behaviour is unreasonable and that he wants to marry Catherine simply to become a US citizen. d) Eddie has been getting increasingly unhappy about the relationship between Catherine and Rodolfo. He doesn’t like the fact that they go out together, and come home late, without his permission. Also, he and his work-mates find Rodolfo’s appearance and behaviour rather unusual. Finally, his wife Beatrice supports Rodolfo, and criticises Eddie for being too concerned about Catherine.

  30. 5. a) Alfieri b) Eddie c) They are talking about Catherine. Eddie has explained that he wants to prevent the developing relationship between Catherine and Rodolfo. He makes several criticisms of Rodolfo, and asks Alfieri for legal advice, but Alfieri tells him that the law can do nothing. He also advises Eddie to let Catherine go, thus showing that he does not accept Eddie’s criticisms of Rodolfo, and believes that the real problem is Eddie’s jealousy. d) Eddie has tried to prevent the relationship from developing, but his efforts have been rejected by both Catherine and Beatrice. In fact, he has even attracted criticism from them for being unreasonable. It seems that he feels forced to take more extreme measures.

  31. 6. a) Beatrice b) Eddie c) She means that Eddie is sexually attracted to Catherine, but he can never satisfy his desire because he is her uncle. d) Eddie has betrayed Marco and Rodolfo to the Immigration Office. Marco wants revenge, but Eddie will not admit his guilt- he still blames Marco for insulting him. Marco is coming to the apartment for revenge, and Beatrice wants to prevent Eddie from fighting him, so she tries to make him understand what he has done wrong.

  32. Section E (20 marks) • Appearance- Age- Marital/ family status- Behaviour- Motivation- temperament- morality. A good answer should not describe just the differences between the characters, but also the similarities, and show how these serve to create some of the play’s themes.

  33. 2. The writer does not make his attitude clear, but as Eddie is the ‘hero’, it seems reasonable to assume that he is not completely mad, and that Catherine and Rodolfo are guilty to some extent. Their ‘youthful’ behaviour could be criticised as naïve, disrespectful, cruel inconsiderate, etc. (with examples). No one tries to help Eddie overcome his obsession.

  34. 3) The play illustrates Eddie’s gradual loss of ‘face’. He starts off as a proud member of the community. By the end of the play he has lost all status in his family and community, and seems not to understand why. He thinks that being tough is all that matters, and he fails to see that this is not enough and that it is sometimes also necessary to show intelligence and sensitivity. He fails to recognise his own inner desires and thus ends up breaking his own ‘rules’, and finally destroying himself.

  35. 4) In traditional societies life is so hard that everyone has to conform to social norms in order to survive. In modern, richer societies there is more personal freedom, but this increases that chance of making mistakes, and also leads to misunderstandings between ‘traditional’ and ‘modern’ people. “adjusting to change’ is a common theme, particularly in developing countries.
