  2. Abrasion • Scrape • no active bleeding • ex: skinned knee

  3. Laceration • Cut • abbrev: LAC

  6. Avulsion • Tissue forcibly torn from body • ex: dog bite

  10. Amputation • Body part torn off • AKA: above-the-knee amputation

  13. TRAUMA • General term meaning injury

  14. Penetrating Trauma • Sharp object forced into skin • Ex: stabbing, pencil in hand

  15. Impaled Object • Object still stuck in body • don’t remove!!!!

  16. Blunt Trauma • Body struck with hard object • ex: hit with baseball

  17. Evisceration • Exposure of intestines due to abdominal injury

  18. Tx of Evisceration • Cover with vaseline coated gauze and then cover with tin foil.

  19. GSW • Gun shot wound • look for entrance and exit wounds

  21. Bleeding Control

  22. Bleeding • Arterial: spurting bright red blood • Venous: oozing darker red blood

  23. Tx of Bleeding • Apply direct pressure • don’t remove dressings--just apply more on top

  24. Tx of Bleeding • Elevate above level of heart • use pressure points if necessary

  25. Tx of Bleeding • Use tourniquets only as LAST resort!!!!

  28. First Degree Burn • Superficial burn • involved epidermis only • redness, mild swelling, pain

  29. First Degree Burn • Sunburn • brief contact with hot object/steam

  30. Second Degree Burn • Partial Thickness burn • injury to epidermis & dermis • blisters form • most painful burn

  32. Second Degree Burn • Excessive sun exposure • sunlamp • artificial radiation • hot or boiling liquid • fire

  34. Third Degree Burn • Full Thickness Burn • most severe • involves all layers of skin + underlying tissue

  35. Third Degree Burn • appears white or charred • destroys nerve endings

  36. Third Degree Burn • Fire • prolonged contact with hot object • electricity • hot/boiling liquid

  38. Burns: TX • Remove source of heat • cool affected area

  39. Burns: TX • relieve pain • treat for shock • prevent infection
