  2. Background • Stalin wanted to kill Ukrainians seeking independence • Ukraine had been under Russian rule for over 200 years • Ukrainians named themselves independent and named Kiev their capital city • Ukrainian national army was fighting the Russian red army

  3. Goal Of Cleansing • Stalin wanted to get rid of everyone that wanted to be independent from his rule. • Stalin sent a message by cutting off the food supply with caused a large food shortage • an estimate of about 7 millions people died due to the food famine • Stalin eventually cut of Ukraine from receiving resources and due to that in 19933 nearly 25% of the population including 3 million children had perished

Foreign Interaction • Stalin wanted to bring back Soviet’s big influence in the Ukraine. • 5,000 Ukrainian scholars, scientists cultural and religious leaders were arrested after being falsely accused of plotting an armed revolt. • Stalin imposed the Soviet system of land management known as collectivization. Which resulted in the seizure of all privately owned farmlands and livestock in a country where 80% of the people were traditional village farmers.

  5. The Outcome • Late 1933 25% of the population of Ukraine, (three million children) had perished. • The Kuklas as a class were destroyed. • Stalin allowed food distribution to resume & the famine subsided. • In 1941 nazi troops invaded the country- to rob the breadbasket.
