  3. The Word Became Flesh 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being 4 in him was life,[a] and the life was the light of all people.5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

  4. SYMBOLS AND IMAGES • Stresses the importance of Jesus’ identity • Jesus is human AND divine • Jesus is the Son of God, who reveals the identity of God and sends the Holy Spirit • Jesus is the Word of God, who is superior to all prophets • Jesus is the Word Incarnate (the Word made flesh) • Uses “I am” statements, irony, signs, and teachings to describe Jesus • Uses opposing statements to show the deeper meaning of Jesus’ mission • Light and dark; unity and division

  5. “I AM” • Jesus uses allegories more than parables in John • Representing an abstract through a material form • Takes 4 forms • Jesus identifies with something that is already know • I am the light; I am the bread • Relationship between Jesus and followers • I am the good shepherd; I am the gate; I am the true vine • Jesus as a life giver • I am the Resurrection and the Life; I am the way, the truth, and the life • Self-Identification • I am he
