The Chesapeake Bay is vital for various animal species that contribute to a healthy ecosystem. Sea squirts play an essential role by filtering pollutants, such as sewage, from the water. Blue crabs are among the bay's most recognized residents, known for their distinctive blue claws and diet that helps maintain ecological balance. Phytoplankton, the microscopic plants that produce their food through photosynthesis, are crucial as they form the base of the food web. Understanding these relationships emphasizes the need for conservation efforts to maintain the bay's health.
