  1. Arts Building Teaching Facilities TaskforceDraft Report to the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Prof Elaine Moriarty, School of Social Sciences and Philosophy Prof John Walsh, School of Education

  2. VISION As a built space, the Arts building should provide an environment that encourages cross-disciplinary teaching, deep and active learning and sociability amongst the student body, faculty staff, the wider academic community and civic society.

  3. SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS • There is a strong demand for the redevelopment of the Arts Building to enable it to become an innovative, stimulating and comfortable learning environment • The aesthetic, facilities and general comfort of the Arts Building requires significant improvement • There remains potential for greater efficiency in room allocation and utilisation, which should be controlled centrally in a transparent fashion • Individual Schools require a limited amount of allocated ‘protected’ teaching space for flexible use throughout the academic year • All teaching and learning spaces need to be designed in an inclusive format to meet College’s obligations under the Disability Act 2005

  4. SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS • Traditional teaching will continue in the medium term, supplemented by active teaching and learning techniques and web based blended learning. • There is a continued need for large (400 seat) traditional lecture accommodation • There is a continued need for medium size (100-200 seat) teaching accommodation with adjustable swivel seating to allow for group work and provide for a variety of teaching approaches • There is a need for multiple smaller learning spaces which allow for collaborative work (20-100 seat). These spaces would also provide for ‘break-out’ work complementing the larger theatres • Communal circulating spaces should provide for multiple possibilities from small group learning to large academic / civic engagement events

  5. Tiered Lecture theatres All tiered lecture theatres between 100-200 seats could be reconfigured as swivel chairs with two rows on each tier to enable group work

  6. Flat Classrooms Round tables with chairs, 6-8 students at each table • Boardroom style

  7. Dedicated collaborative teaching and learning spaces Informal teaching and learning spaces

  8. Teaching and Learning Scholarship & Training • Continuing professional development embedded for all staff • Accredited teaching and learning programme leading to qualification • Fee remission to support and promote professionalisation of teaching • Range of short training options particularly in developing technologically infused classroom
