Exploring the Fascinating World of Invertebrates

Invertebrates are a diverse group of organisms that lack a backbone, classified into various categories based on their unique characteristics. Sponges filter water to obtain food, while coelenterates like jellyfish and corals possess stinging tentacles. Flatworms, nematodes, molluscs, annelids, arthropods, and echinoderms all represent distinct classes within this vast phylum. For example, arthropods make up 80% of Earth’s animals and include species with jointed legs. Understanding these living beings showcases the complexity of life, distinguishing them from non-living entities.

  1. Invertebrate Groups

  2. 1. Sponges

  3. Sponges • Sponges pump water through the hole at the top and filter tiny (microscopic) particles of food that are floating in the water • You can blend them up and they will re-assemble as they were before!

  4. 2. Coelenterates Many have stinging tentacles -includes jellyfish and coral http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dh7azi3fFQY

  5. Brain Coral

  6. 3. Flatworms • FLAT animals. Not what we consider ‘WORMS’ • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOs650f6c5M

  7. 4. Nematodes THIS GROUP includes worms (roundworms, pinworms). Some are parasitic (What is a parasite!?) Don’t believe me!? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOs650f6c5M

  8. 5. Molluscs • Soft-bodied animals that are often protected by an outer shell e.g. Snails, Oysters, Clams, Squid and Octopus

  9. SMART OCTOPUS CONE SNAIL

  10. 6. Annelids • This group includes roundworms (the one you see often) and leeches!

  11. The Largest Roundworm... • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOs650f6c5M

  12. 7. Arthropods • This is a HUGE group that includes 80% of the earth’s animals!! • All have jointed legs

  13. 8. Echinoderms • This group includes STARFISH, urchins, sea cucumbers and sea horses! EVER SEEN A SEA STAR EAT!?

  14. Task • Write a paragraph highlighting your knowledge of organisms using ALL of the words below... ORGANISM, INVERTEBRATE, CLASSIFY, LIVING, VERTEBRATE, NON-LIVING, CHARACTERISTICS, EXAMPLE, COLD-BLOODED, WATER, LAND, BIRD, ARTHROPOD, HUMAN
