  1. 3stepABS Diagnostics

  2. ABS ISSUES Majority of ABS problems are sensor related Significant number of ABS malfunctions are power related. (low or insufficient voltage, excessive voltage) Over 50% of ECU’s warranty returns are functional ABS operation is now being checked on road DOT Inspections

  3. IF there is an unreliable 12 volt dc power source… COMMON ABS TESTING ISSUES High voltages over 13.8v create half life conditions Unregulated voltage spikes damage ECU’s (battery chargers, transformers) Low voltages will not power ECU’s (require 8.5v)

  4. ABS FACTS • TMC has (2) Recommended Practices for ABS operation: • RP 137 specifies the tractor Auxiliary output voltage to be a minimum of 10 volts measured at the vehicle cable trailer connector. • RP 141 specifies 9.5v is required at the ABS Electronic Control Unit with the entire trailer systems powered. NOTE: The ABS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) will not power up or stay operational with low voltage.

  5. INSPECTOR 910B

  6. Operate one circuit at a time CIRCUIT TESTING Observe circuit voltage & amperage Circuit faults will be discovered Open Short Open ground Chassis ground

  7. ABS POWER Brake and Auxiliary electrical circuits are critical for ABS • The Brake circuit: • Activates the ABS operation when the brakes are applied. • is the back up power for the ECU for operating the ABS when Auxiliary power is Not present at ECU. • Auxiliary : • primary power for the ECU. • is the Power Line Carrier (PLC) for data transmission.

  8. ABS TESTING PROCESS The INSPECTOR 910B includes software to communicate with ABS controllers from MERITOR WABCO, HALDEX, and BENDIX. As new INSPECTOR software is available, the firmware is updated to include the new software. A microchip is delivered to the shop technician for installation.

  9. The INSPECTOR ABS operation keys • ABS (identify ABS manufacturer and retrieve active faults) • STORED (read stored faults) • CLEAR (remove stored faults) • HELP (manufacturers’ recommended troubleshooting and repair guidance). • Read ECU mileage.

  10. 1step • Press BRAKE to verify the correct operation of brake circuit and verify that secondary power is being provided to the ABS ECU. The ABS warning light should flash on and off after a few seconds. • The INSPECTOR should indicate that the BRAKE circuit is ‘good’. • Does ABS warning light flash on and off after approximately 3 seconds? • Possible faults: No lamp, faulty lamp, contacts, or wiring between lamp and ABS ECU • If lamp remains on, ABS fault is present or lamp is miss-wired • Do the air solenoids chatter verifying the operation of the ECU valve module? • No chatter suggests valves are not powered or may be defective.

  11. 2step • Press AUX to verify correct operation of auxiliary circuit and primary power to ABS ECU. The trailer warning light should flash on and off. • The INSPECTOR should indicate that the AUX circuit is ‘good’. • Does Warning light flash on and off after approximately 3 seconds? • Possible faults: No lamp, faulty lamp, or open wiring circuit between lamp and ABS ECU • If lamp remains on, ABS fault is present or lamp is miss-wired • Do the air solenoids chatter verifying the operation of the ECU valve module?

  12. 3step • Press ABS key to read the ABS controller's condition. • Will identify ECU manufacturer • Will display ABS PLC fault(s) with description • Press SELECT/HELP key to read recommended repair Follow ABS manufacturer’s recommended practices to make repairs.

  13. ABS FACTS • Typically, the Electronic Control Unit will draw about 0.10 amp as read with the Auxiliary circuit. • Add the total number of ECU’s in a combination for total ECU amp load. • Other devices such as Tire Inflation Systems and metering devices have similar amp loads.

  14. ADVANTEC 920 THE NEXT AUTOMATED TRAILER TESTER WITH ABS ROAD STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEMS. • New electronic platform- faster, more detail, higher resolution • 4 line display with more information

  15. ADVANTEC 920 WILL INCLUDE THE ABS ROAD STABILITY CODES • Automatically identify ABS manufacturer and configuration • Display all current and stored faults • ECU voltage • Trip odometer mileage & ECU mileage • Provide help repair directions

  16. ADVANTEC 920 SOFTWARE ROUTINES MAKE IT SIMPLE FOR THE TECHNICIAN. • Automatically perform the 3Step ABS identifying circuit issues first. • Includes all PLC software since 2001 • Easy to upgrade via LITE-CHECK email download

  17. ADVANTEC 920 ADVANTEC 920 WITH THE FULL FUNCTION REMOTE CONTROL FOR BRAKES AND LIGHTS. • Complete brake operation and inspection at the axle with air leak testing. • Circuit testing with accurate diagnostics with fault identification and alarm.

  18. ADVANTEC 920 IS THE ULTIMATE SOLUTION FOR TRAILER INSPECTIONS AND MAINTENANCE. ONE TOOL ONE PERSON ONE PROCESS

  19. ADVANTEC 920

  20. ONE TOOL • ONE PERSON • ONE PROCESS COMPREHENSIVE TRAILER TESTING • Single tool with diagnostic features • One person operation that is simple to use • Consistent process • Perform trailer DOT test within 10 minutes including • inspection for proper brake adjustments • Reduce repair costs because of accurate diagnostics • Improve on time delivery with road worthy equipment • Reduce road costs including downtime, OOS violations, road • service

  22. GOOD MAINTENANCE=GOOD BUSINESS CUSTOMER COMMENT: “We are using the INSPECTOR in the shop on each trailer that comes in for service. When we make a repair, we are also using it post-repair to certify expected results. We know the repairs are effective and the unit is ready for duty. I just believe our less-experienced techs benefit from the tool and I sleep better at night.”
