  1. Step 3: Strategies Critical Reading: Passages

  2. Additional Strategies for Item Types (Record these on page 452- they are not listed in the summary sheet.) • Main Idea- Look for answer choice that covers the main elements without referencing material NOT discussed in the passage. Incorrect answer choices are either too limited or too broad, going beyond scope of the passage. • Explicit Detail Clues- Information is in the passage, not necessarily with exact wording. Look for “locator words” within the stem or in the answer choices. Sometimes an answer choice is specifically mentioned in the selection, but is wrong because it does not respond to the question.

  3. Additional Strategies for Item Types • Vocabulary Clues- Use context clues. If the word is familiar, look for secondary meaning or usage in that context. • Development Clues- Treat “overall development” questions as a Main Idea item. To answer the “why of specific details” questions, locate that reference and ask, “Why did the author do this?” looking for the answer that best describes the structure. • Implied Ideas Clues- Will not be explicitly stated, but will be strongly supported by the passage. Make logical arguments as you eliminate incorrect answers.

  4. Additional Strategies for Item Types • Application Clues- Apply what you have learned, what you can logically conclude from the passage, and logically support in a new situation • Voice Clues- Sometimes it is useful to arrange the answer choices in some kind of meaningful order, e.g. negative to positive. Also, remember BOTH words must be correct.
