CERN EP R&D InGrid & GridPix: The Quad for third users Bonn Nikhef IZM-Berlin Fraunhofer ASI
The InGrid+TimePix-3 system marks a significant advancement in Time Projection Chamber (TPC) technology. Developed in collaboration with CERN's EP R&D, Bonn, Nikhef, and IZM-Berlin, this modular platform allows for precise ionization detection in gaseous environments. Prototype tests conducted at ELSA demonstrated an absence of defects and enhanced performance in spatial resolution and dE/dX measurement using cluster counting. The system aims to support future lepton collider projects like ILC and CLIC, offering scalability and versatility with its GridPix chips and SPIDRE readout system.

InGrid + TimePix-3: the ultimate TPC • after tests with prototypes in ELSA test beam @ Bonn: • absence of defects in protection layer: spark proof (at last, after 8 year!) • Time slewing: reduction with ToT correction • spatial (X,Y) resolution of single electrons limited • by pixel size and diffusion only • dE/dX improvement using cluster counting: M. Hauschild, Garfield, Geant4 • So: InGrid+TimePix-3: extracts all information primary ionisation: • the ultimate gaseous TDC
Wirebond PCB Guard TPC for future Lepton Collider ILC, CLIC Need 15 m2 covered with GridPix chips: modular system: the Quad Modules can simply pressed together to form any super module First quad is ready for tests, including SPIDRE readout system Cold carrier plate LV- regulation Stump Flex
Make QUADs + Spidre available for third users: • mini TPCs: CAST • mini trackers: Li-Depth Profile (neutron irradiated) • Mossbauer Spectroscopy • nuclear physics experiments • (X-ray) instrumentation • beam therapy instrumentation
InGrid/GridPix strongly related to CERN EP R&D: • links with Gaseous Detectors, namely RD51 • Garfield, Geant4 • explicit use (and marketing) of MediPix Consortium IP • long & standing tradition MWPCs and MPGDs at CERN • Amsterdam Scientific Instruments ASI wants to commercialize the Quads • CERN is (anyway) involved via the Medipix Consortium • Other activity & participation seems possible.
Mini TPCs require gas, in small volumes Nikhef gas mixing station, made by Fred Hartjes! • JSP bottles 25 l, 25 bar as standard • fully computer controlled • allowed to use the bottles at CERN(!) • more flexible and economical with respect to industry (Linde, AirProducts)
