  1. Department of Biotechnology ASTU

  2. Content • Development of the department • Scientific directions • Waste treatment and utilization • Proposals for cooperation

  3. Development of the department • 1949- Formation of the independent course «Technology of wood hydrolysis production» • 1958- Creation of the department «Chemistry of wood, pulp and wood hydrolysis production» • 1997- Foundation of the Department of Biotechnology

  4. Professors: Gelfand E.D.(D.Sc.) Novozhilov E.V.(D.Sc.) Kamennyi V.I.(Cand.Sc.) Associate Professors: Popova G.I.(Сand.Sc.) Chuhchin D.G.(Cand.Sc.) Churkina U.V.(Cand.Sc.) Laboratory staff Post-grad.students Department personnelHead of the Department, professor, D.Chem.Sc.Sokolov O.M.

  5. Cooperation

  6. Cooperation • Pulp and paper mills- Arkhangelsk PPM, Kotlas PPM, Solombala PPM; • Brewery, Dairy farming, Bakery, Alcoholic beverage Companies; • Enzymes production companies- Novozymes A/S (Denmark), «РОСАЛКО»(Russia); • Universities- MSU.

  7. Scientific directions Basic: 1. Processing of biochemical hydrolyzates (distillery dregs, liquors) and sewage (purification); 2.Separation processes for bioproducts and microorganisms selection; 3.Development of new methods of medias preparation for microorganisms cultivation (yeasts, moulds, bacteria); 4. Dewatering methods for biological wastes; 5. Biochemical treatment of molasses and vegetal matter.

  8. Scientific directions New: 1. Enzymatic treatment in pulp and paper industry (bleaching, pitch control, recycling of cardboard and newsprint); 2. Improvement of the taste and quality of the fruit juice, beer and soft drinks; 3. Waste control: dewatering of the sewage wastes with biodegradable additions and enzymes;

  9. Scientific directions New: 4. Development of the biotechnological methods for oil production; 5. Automatic methods of microbial suspension monitoring; 6.Treatment of vegetal matter with low-temperature plasma.

  10. Economy Education Efficiency Environmental safety Research GoalsFour well-aimed «E»s for perfect result

  11. Waste treatment and utilization Basic stages of the waste treatment: • Dewatering Main agents: mineral and organic components, bioactive substances, enzymes. • Deodorizing • Rendering harmless • Utilization

  12. Waste treatment and utilization Structure and composition control of the biological sludge

  13. Future projects and Proposals for cooperation • Use of enzyme technology in pulp and paper industry; • Biological purification of sewage and waste utilization; • Analytical methods for enzymes purification and proteins fractionation;

  14. Future projects and Proposals for cooperation • Exchange of information (new technology, biologically active substances, enzymes); • United efforts to make a leap from the lab work to mill scale; • To find new directions with good prospects for mutual work.

  15. Thank you!
