Short term training programmes : • Mid career scientists (ongoing) • 2-4 weeks training for 12-15 participants in advanced techniques of biotechnology by leading institutes in the country. • 5 in 2002, 8 in 2003, 11 in 2004 and 15 in 2005 • Biotech industrial training programme • Training of post graduate students in biotech industries for six months • 46 students completed training, 19 offered jobs in 2005-06

New Initiatives • Short term training programmes for college teachers involved in undergraduate teaching • 2-4 weeks training for 12-15 college teachers in advanced techniques of biotechnology by leading institutes in the country. • Advertisement seeking proposals inserted • Proposals received, considered by 3 member expert committee • Proposals recommended for support by DBT. • Short term training programmes for teachers of PG teaching institutes • 2-4 weeks training for 12-15 faculty members in advanced techniques of biotechnology • Proposals invited from NBRC, TIFR, AIIMS, NII, ICGEB, CRI, IIR, CMC, TERI, IARI, GBPUA&T, UAS, IVRI, IIT, UICT, NCCS, NIO, CCMB, IISC, Bose Institute • Proposals received, considered by 3 member expert committee • Proposals recommended for support by DBT.

Fellowships : • (i) DBT-Junior Research Fellowship • Initiated in 2004 • Provision for 100 JRF per year • Selection by Biotechnology eligibility test conducted by University of Poona (Pune) • Number to be increased to 500 in a phased manner. • Earlier 2 students each for DBT teaching programmes and teaching institutes • From 2006, students given option to select institute as in CSIR-UGC NET • No. of JRF’s selected: 2004-26, 2005 – 59, 2006-100 • From 2007, 100 students given option to select institute as in CSIR-UGC NET and 2 students each for DBT teaching programmes and teaching institutes

(ii) DBT- Post Doctoral Fellowship • Scheme modified in April, 2001 • Provision for 100 PDF per year • Selection by Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore • Number to be increased to 500 in a phased manner and preference to be given to agricultural, pharma, medical biotechnology • Number of PDF’s selected: • 2001-02 66, 2002-03 77, 2003-04 38 • 2004-05 28, 2005-06 68, 2006-07 88

Awards • (i) Biology scholarships • 25 scholarships for top students in biology at CBSE 10+2 • Cash prize of Rs. 15,000/-, gold plated medal and certificate of merit. • (ii) National Award for Women Bioscientist • One senior award (Rs. One lakh, citation and gold coated medal) • Two young awards (Rs. 50,000/- , citation and gold coated medal) • (iii) Biotech product and process development and commercialization awards • Provision for 5-6 awards for scientists from public funded institutions and one from private institute. • Cash prize of Rs. One lakh alongwith citation and trophy. • (iv) National bioscientist award for career development • Provision for 10 awards per year • Cash prize of Rs. One lakh and research grant of Rs. 3 lakh per year for 3 years • (v) Innovative young biotechnologist award • Cash award of Rs. One lakh and grant in aid of Rs. 10 lakhs for 3 years

OTHER HRD PROGRAMMES OF DBT • Overseas Associateship for 3 months to 1 year for training in overseas laboratories • Provision for inviting visiting scientists from Abroad. • Popular lectures by eminent scientists • Short term training courses for Mid-Career Scientists • Financial Support for organizing National/International Seminar/Symposia • Travel Support for participation in International Seminar/Symposia • National Science Day Celebration by PG teaching Institutes.
